Wild Things sweep twinbill at Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Rookies Dominc Puccetti and Andrew Herbert combined on a four-hit shutout as the Wild Things blanked Evansville 1-0 Thursday night in the first game of a Frontier League doubleheader at Bosse Field.
Washington won the nightcap 8-6 by overcoming a four-run deficit, scoring five times in the sixth inning.
Pusccetti (1-1) allowed one run over six innings and struck out three for his first professional win. He gave way to Herbert in the seventh. Evansville had a one-out single in the seventh but Herbert ended the game with his second and third strikeouts of the inning. Herbert earned his third save.
Washington, which lost a 15-12 slugfest to the Otters on Wednesday when Evansville hit seven home runs, was gifted a run in the sixth inning and it proved to be the difference in the game. Evansville’s Parker Brahams (1-3) hit Ethan Wilder with a pitch with one out. Two batters later, Tyreque Reed was hit by a pitch and Andrew Czech followed with a walk to load the bases.
Washington’s Wagner Lagrange then seemed to have hit an inning-ending flyout. However, Brahms was called for a balk on the play, sending Wilder home with the game’s only run.
In the second game, Evansville led 4-1 entering the sixth inning when the Wild Things mounted their comeback. Jeff Liquori had an RBI double, Sammy Infanate added an RBI groundout and catcher Three Hillier tied the score at 4-4 with a run-scoring single. Hillier was signed Wednesday when Willie Estrada was put on the 7-day injured list.
Tommy Caufield put Washington up 6-4 with a two-run double.
Wilder hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
Reliever Ryan Chasse (1-0) was the winning pitcher, tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
