Wild Things set roster, bring back Chayka
The Wild Things made a series of moves Wednesday to set their roster prior to their Frontier League season opener Friday.
Washington signed outfielder Robert Chayka, who had played parts of two seasons with the Wild Things, released pitcher Nick McClanahan, who was the team’s first-round draft pick at the Frontier League tryout, and put outfielder Jake DeLeo and pitcher Tyler Wehrle on the 7-day injured list.
Chayka played with Washington in 2023 and batted .293 with 17 doubles and six home runs in his rookie season. Last year, he was hitting .230 in 61 games before he was traded to Windy City. Chayka was with Gateway this spring but recently was given his release.
Washington will begin the season with 25 active players. The Wild Things must be down to 24 players prior to June 5.
Washington will play its final exhibition game tonight (7 p.m.) at home against the Ottawa Titans. Admission is free. The regular season begins Friday at Windy City. The home opener is Tuesday against Ottawa.
