Wild Things sending 4 to all-star game
The Wild Things, who have the best record in the Frontier League’s Midwest Conference at 34-17, will be well-represented at next week’s all-star game at Thomas More Stadium in Florence, Ky.
Washington will have four players in the game, including one starter.
Left field Anthony Brocato, who is tied for the league lead in home runs with teammate Andrew Czech, will be in the Midwest’s starting lineup. Brocato and Czech each have 15 home runs and both players joined the 100-career home run club earlier this year. Brocato also leads the league in slugging percentage at .665.
Czech is the only other position player chosen for the all-star game from the Wild Things. He leads the league with RBI (58) and walks (48) and is second in OPS (1.090).
The Wild Things have two pitchers who were voted into the game. Starter Kobe Foster leads the league in almost every pitching category, including ERA (2.15), WHIP (0.86), innings pitched (62.2), and wins (6). The veteran lefty also has 55 strikeouts.
Washington closer Landon Ginn also made the all-star team. Ginn (0-1, 2.25) picked up his sixth save Sunday during the Wild Things’ doubleheader sweep at Schaumburg.
Washington’s all-star total was hurt by having six players, including four starting pitchers, picked up by major league organizations in the first half of the season.
Evansville had the most players selected to the Midwest team with five, including three starting position players. Quebec, which has the best record in the league at 34-15, has six players on the Atlantic Conference team.
Managers for both teams will be named today.
The league’s 33rd all-star game will be played Wednesday, July 15.
Fowler is POW
Wild Things third baseman Cole Fowler was named the Frontier League Player of the Week on Monday.
A second-year third baseman, Fowler helped Washington to a 4-2 record by going 13-for-24 (.542) at the plate. He smacked three doubles, two home runs and drove in nine. He also scored eight runs.
For the season, Fowler is batting .288 with 12 doubles, eight home runs and 42 RBI.
Fowler is the third Washington player to garner Player of the Week honors this season.
