Home runs, O’Hanlon’s pitching spark Wild Things
FLORENCE, Ky. – Washington hit four home runs and Michael O’Hanlon pitched five shutout innings of relief as the Wild Things defeated Florence 12-5 Thursday night to complete a three-game series sweep.
Washington extended its winning streak to six games and completed its nine-game road trip with a 7-2 record.
Anthony Brocato and Andrew Czech hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning as Washington opened a 7-5 lead. O’Hanlon (2-0) kept the Wild Things in front as he allowed only three hits and did not issue a walk. He struck out five.
Kyle Edwards hit a two-run homer in Washington’s four-run second inning. Caleb Ketchup added a two-run homer in the seventh. Ketchup scored four runs.
Prior to the game, the Wild Things signed rookie pitcher Bailey Matela out of Old Dominion University. Matela started the game and went four innings, allowing six hits and five runs (three earned). He walked three and struck out three.
To make room for Matela on the roster, Washington placed pitcher Zander Sechrist on the 7-day injured list.
The Wild Things will host Lake Erie in a weekend series beginning tonight. It is the final series before the Frontier League’s all-star break.
