Wild Things game suspended
The Wild Things’ home game Saturday night against the Florence Y’alls was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning because of rain.
Florence had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Hank Zeisler hit a two-out, opposite-field homer to left centerfield.
In the bottom of the sixth, Florence retired the first two Washington hitters and the third, Antonio Monroy, had a 1-1 count on him when the players were called off the field by the umpires as heavy rain hit EQT Park.
Following a 44-minute delay, the decision was made to suspend the game. It will be resumed Sunday at 4:05 p.m. before the regularly scheduled game, which will be only seven innings in length.
Florence was one out away from winning Saturday night’s game. Had the Y’alls been able to retire Monroy and end the inning before play stopped, then the game would have been official. However, because Florence gained the lead in the top of the sixth and the inning was not complete, the game had to be considered suspended.
The first five innings were a pitchers duel between Washington’s Hector Garcia and Florence lefty Evan Webster. Garcia allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out eight. Washington had only two hits off Webster, who also did not issue a walk. He struck out one.
The Wild Things’ hits were singles by Connor Peek and Caleb Ketchup.
