Wild Things’ Davis picked up by Red Sox
The Wild Things have continued to win, even if they lose a player, or three, to major league organizations.
Left-handed pitcher Tyler Davis became the latest Washington player to be picked up. It was announced Tuesday that Davis, who was the Wild Things’ closer, had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox, pending a physical.
He is the third Wild Things player to be picked up since the start of the Frontier League season. Pitcher Andrew Herbert had his contract purchased by Baltimore and second baseman Graham Brown went to Minnesota.
Davis, from Newport News, Va., was in his first season with Washington after being signed in the offseason. He played last year in the Kansas City Royals’ farm system at the Class A level.
“Well, the kid who came to Washington because he felt like this was the best situation for him to get another chance with an affiliated organization has been proven right,” Washington manager Tom Vaeth said in a release. “We are very happy to have helped Tyler achieve his goal. TD did a great job in the role of closer in his short time with us. …. The sky is the limit for Tyler. Lefties with the ability to sit 93-95 mph like he can usually go pretty far in this game. We enjoyed having him in our family and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.”
Davis will be the 54th player to have his contract purchased by a major league organization directly from the Wild Things. He will be the second to go to the Red Sox. The first was relief pitcher Nate Striz in 2012.
Davis appeared in nine games for Washington. He had a 1-1 record, four saves and a 0.87 ERA. In 10.1 innings, he struck out 12 and walked only two.
In 2024, Davis was drafted in the 14th round by Kansas City after playing his final two years of college baseball at Mississippi State. He began his college career at Virginia Commonwealth.
