Wild Things hit 2 grand slams, rout Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Jeff Liquori and Cole Fowler each hit a grand slam, Andrew Czech smacked his 100th career home run and the Wild Things won a hit-filled game over the Evansville Otters, 23-10, Tuesday night in a series opener at Bosse Field.
The 23 runs tied the franchise record for runs in a game. It was last accomplished in 2018 against Traverse City. Washington also scored 23 runs in a 2003 game at Cook County.
Washington was able to stretch its lead over second-place Evansville to three games in the Frontier League’s Central Division.
The Wild Things had 21 hits, including four each by Antonio Monroy and Anthony Brocato, the latter also hitting a home run. Washington forged an 11-3 lead in the third inning, saw Evansville close to within 12-8 in the fifth and then broke open the game by scoring nine times in the top of the sixth, including a grand slam by Fowler.
Evansville’s Sam Linscott also hit a grand slam.
Prior to the game, Washington signed pitcher Mack Anglin, a former seventh-round draft pick out of Clemson by the Kansas City Royals. Anglin was the winning pitcher, tossing the fifth inning.
The Wild Things were so far ahead late in the game that Washington shortstop Kyle Edwards pitched the bottom of the ninth inning. Edwards retired all three batters he faced.
