Wild Things’ streaks snapped by Y’alls
The Wild Things weren’t going 51-0 at home, right?
Their hot start to the season, which included six consecutive wins, had to be cooled off at some point, right?
The answers were yes and yes.
And, yes, that streak-snapping loss happened Wednesday night when the Florence Y’alls rode seven strong innings by starter Evan Webster and defeated Washington, 7-6.
It was the Wild Things’ first loss of the season at soggy EQT Park.
Webster (2-1), a 6-3 lefty who is in his third season in the Frontier League after his college days at Louisville, stymied what had been a potent Washington lineup, allowing four hits, striking out seven and walking only one.
Nothing went quite right for the Wild Things. Even when Anthony Brocato hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to pull the Wild Things to within 6-3, setting off a flashing light show, the new LED lights did not turn back on immediately and play had to be stopped for a minute until they could be turned back on.
Washington did hold a lead. The Wild Things scored in the first inning when Kyle Edwards hit a triple deep to left centerfield and scored on a groundout by Andrew Czech.
The 1-0 lead lasted only until the third inning, when Florence tied it against Washington starter Zander Sechrist (0-2), scoring an unearned run.
The Y’alls took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Zade Richardson.
Florence took firm control by scoring three times in the sixth against reliever Michael Foltz Jr. Kyle Harbison drove in the first run with an infield single and Jackson Tucker added a two-out, two-run single.
Brocato’s fourth home run of the season made it 6-3 in the seventh, but Florence answered with a run in the eighth off reliever Chad Coles.
Washington made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth when center fielder Caleb Ketchup hit a two-out, three-run homer off Florence closer Aiden McEvoy to make it a one-run game, but a flyout ended the game.
Washington was held to six hits, including two by Czech.
Extra bases
Washington manager Tom Vaeth was ejected in the top of the fifth inning by home plate umpire Lukas Naley, apparently for arguing balls and strikes. … Prior to the game, Washington made a flurry of roster moves, bringing back two former players. Washington re-acquired lefthanded pitcher Colt Anderson from the Ottawa Titans to complete an earlier trade. That deal was one at the end of spring training that sent Anderson to the Titans for a player to be named, meaning that Anderson was actually traded for himself. He could be in line to start a game this weekend against Joliet. The Wild Things also signed outfielder Wagner Lagrange and placed him on the visa inactive list. Lagrange played the last four years for Washington. Pitcher Ethan Brown was transferred from the 14-day injured list to the 60-day IL.
