Wild Things add infielder from Mexican League
The Wild Things have made several changes to their infield over the past few days, one out of necessity, another other by choice.
On Tuesday, prior to starting a six-game road trip at Schaumburg, Washington signed veteran second baseman Antonio Monroy, who played the last four years in the Mexican League.
The signing comes on the heels of the Wild Things releasing rookie second baseman D.J. Banks on Monday and losing their starter at the position, Graham Brown, to the Minnesota Twins organization late last week.
Over the weekend, Washington added rookie infielder Connor Peek out of Georgetown in the Big East Conference.
Monroy joins Washington while having some familiarity with some of its players. He was a teammate of Wild Things pitcher Hector Garcia for two years at Hope International, an NAIA school in California. In the Mexican League last year, Monroy was a teammate of Wild Things pitcher Kobe Foster.
Last season, Monroy batted .254 in the Mexican League with four home runs and 18 RBI in 54 games.
At Hope International, Monroy was a second team All-American in 2021, when he hit 12 doubles and 13 home runs.
The Wild Things’ game against Schaumburg ended too late to be included in this edition. The series continue through Thursday before Washington plays a weekend series at Central Division rival Lake Erie.
