Brocato sets Frontier League HR record in Wild Things’ win
The Washington Wild Things took home the series opener Friday night against the Schaumburg Boomers on a historic night for the Frontier League. The Wild Things won 9-2 and saw Anthony Brocato hit his 37th home run to break a 28-year-old Frontier League single-season record.
Brocato’s home run opened the bottom fo the first inning and move dhim ahead of Morgan Burkhart, who clubbed 36 homers in 80 games in 1998. Brocato’s long ball also extended his hit streak to 13 games and his on-base streak to 20 games, both of which are season bests.
Washington wasn’t done in the first, scoring three more runs highlighted by an RBI book-rule double by Connor Peek and a two-run single by Antonio Monroy. Leading 4-0, Washington saw Kellum Clark hit his 13th homer of the year in the second to trim the lead.
Washington’s Andrew Czech belted his 27th homer of the season to center, making it 6-1 on the two-run blast in the second. The power show continued in the third with Isaias Quiroz’s fifth homer of the year. That made it 8-1 in the third.
Kobe Foster got the win with five innings of one-run ball. He scattered four hits and struck out four.
Washington is a season-high 33 games over .500 and winners of seven in a row.
With the other results in the Midwest Conference in, Washington is slightly closer to finding out who it will play in the playoffs. Florence defeated Windy City, which ties the Y’alls and Bolts for the final wild-card spot and keeps the Bolts a game behind Schaumburg in the West entering the penultimate day of the regular season.
