O-R launches homeless funds
As part of the ongoing No Place to Call Home series, the Observer-Reporter has established charitable funds at the Washington County Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of Greene County.
“We have a voice in the community,” said Lucy Corwin, director of news. “The staff has been so involved in this project, we wanted to figure out a way to make a difference.”
The newspaper has partnered with the two community foundations to raise money for local organizations that support homeless initiatives. Washington Health System, along with the Observer-Reporter, already have made contributions to the funds.
Employees of the newspaper, too, have shown support for the project, raising more than $700 at a benefit lunch Friday to kick off the series. Additional fundraisers are being planned internally as the project evolves throughout the year.
“We hope the community and other businesses join us,” Corwin said.
Donations may be made directly to the funds by visiting the Washington County Community Foundation website at http://www.wccf.net/ and clicking on “For Donors,” then “List of Funds” and “No Place to Call Home: Homeless Fund.” In Greene County, donations may be mailed to the Community Foundation of Greene County, P.O. Box 678, Waynesburg, PA, 15370. Please specify “No Place to Call Home Fund” on the check.
One-hundred percent of the money collected will be distributed back into both counties at the end of the project. Agencies that provide services to the homeless will be given instructions on how to apply for grants later in the year.
