AGH doctor to be honored at fundraiser
Allegheny General Hospital gastroenterologist Dr. Abhijit Kulkarni will be recognized with the Courage Award for his extraordinary work in pancreatology at the National Pancreas Foundation’s annual fundraising gala.
The Courage for a Cure fundraiser will be held June 21 at the Duquesne Club in downtown Pittsburgh.
Kulkarni is medical director of the gastroenterology laboratory at Allegheny General Hospital and an avid researcher focusing on pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis.
After attending medical school in India, Kulkarni completed residency training at the Medical Center of Central Massachusetts followed by a fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and serves as an assistant professor of medicine at the Drexel University College of Medicine.
He is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American Society of Gastroenterological Endoscopy and American College of Gastroenterology.
“It is very gratifying to be honored by an organization that has done so much to advance the study of pancreatic disease and work toward new discoveries that will help people to live longer, healthier lives,” said Kulkarni.
In its 13 years, the National Pancreas Foundation has funded more than $2 million in research and generated an additional $12 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health and other institutions.
Locally, NPF has funded pancreas disease research programs at several medical centers. For the first time, the Western Pennsylvania chapter of NPF will be presenting research grant awards at the June 21 gala.
