Baseball scout Epy Guerrero dies at 71

1 min read

TORONTO (AP) – The Toronto Blue Jays held a moment of silence before Thursday night’s game against Baltimore to mark the death of prolific scout Epy Guerrero.

The Blue Jays said he died Thursday at 71 in his native Dominican Republic. The team didn’t provide additional details.

Guerrero signed All-Star outfielder Cesar Cedeno for Houston and brought several top players to the Blue Jays, including Tony Fernandez, Alfredo Griffin and Carlos Delgado. He also scouted for the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers.

The brother of former major league shortstop Mario Guerrero, his two sons, Epy Jr. and Mike, both played in the minors.

Both Delgado and former big league manager Manny Acta posted messages on Twitter to remember Guerrero.

Guerrero was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
