Small college roundup: Waynesburg defeats Bethany at buzzer
After a free throw to put Bethany up one point with five seconds remaining, Waynesburg’s Julie Deklaven made a game-winning layup as time expired to give the Yellow Jackets a 71-70 victory in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
Deklaven’s winning shot completed a Waynesburg (2-1 in the PAC, 4-3 overall) comeback after heading into halftime trailing by 12 points, 37-25. The Yellow Jackets outscored Bethany 22-16 in the third quarter and 24-17 in the fourth.
Bethany (1-2 in the PAC, 1-6 overall) was led by a game-high 27 points from Kelsea Daugherty. Sammie Weiss, a McGuffey graduate, scored 18 points for the Bison.
Waynesburg was paced by Mackenna Drazich, who finished with 20 points.
Men’s Results
Jimmy Leichliter scored 20 points to lead Geneva past Washington & Jefferson 74-49 in a PAC game in Metheny Fieldhouse.
Washington & Jefferson (0-3 in the PAC, 1-6 overall) only shot 30 percent from the field. The Presidents were led by Jonathan Devito and Mitch Dezort, both finished with eight points.
Geneva (1-2 in the PAC, 3-4 overall) also had two other players scoring in double figures.
Ethan Moose made 7 of 13 field goals for 15 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds. Danny Torok also finished with 10 points.
Bethany 73, Waynesburg 65: Matt Popeck scored a game-high 25 points but it wasn’t enough as Waynesburg was defeated by Bethany, 73-65, in a PAC game.
After falling behind quickly to start the game, taking a 34-21 deficit into halftime, Waynesburg (1-2 in the PAC, 1-5 overall) cut the lead to only one point, 58-57, when Popeck connected on two free throws with 3:12 remaining in the second half.
However, Bethany (3-0 in the PAC, 3-5 overall) scored seven of the next eight points to pull away in the final minutes.
The Bison were led by 6-8 center Liam Davis, who finished with 18 points.
Jon Knab had 15 points for Waynesburg.
