Girls basketball roundup: Charleroi rallies in 2nd half to trip Carmichaels
Maria Claybaugh led all scorers with 18 points as host Charleroi overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Carmichaels 53-33 in its home tournament Friday night.
The Cougars, who only scored 15 first-half points and trailed 18-15 at halftime, outscored Carmichaels 38-15 in the final two quarters.
Charleroi’s Bella Skobel finished with 16 points, while Sierra Short had 11.
Carmichaels was paced by Megan Walker and Kyle Sinn, who each had 10 points.
West Greene 60, Waynesburg 25: Madison Lampe scored 21 points and West Greene rode a big third quarter en route to a 60-25 victory over host Waynesburg in a nonsection game.
West Greene led 26-12 at halftime, then outscored the Raiders 22-6 in the third quarter.
Elizabeth Brudnock scored 14 points for West Greene and made three three-pointers.
Elle Hampson led Waynesburg with 10 points. The Raiders were held to only six field goals.
South Fayette 62, Freeport 39: Jordyn Caputo scored a game-high 25 points and South Fayette pulled away in the second half for a 62-39 victory over Freeport in the Lions’ tip-off tournament.
South Fayette will play Upper St. Clair in today’s championship game.
The Lions led 28-24 at halftime before outscoring the Yellowjackets 18-5 in the third quarter.
Maddi Gutierrez scored 11 points for South Fayette.
Hopewell 35, California 33: Siara Conley made two free throws with two seconds remaining to give Hopewell a 35-33 victory over California in the South Side Beaver tournament.
California had erased a 20-15 halftime deficit to take a 27-25 lead entering the final eight minutes. Bailey Vig led the Trojans with 14 points.
Hopewell had made only four of 13 free throws until Conley’s two game-deciding attempts. Conley led the Vikings with 11 points.
Fort Cherry 44, Jefferson-Morgan 18: McKenzie Faure scored 11 points to help Fort Cherry knock off Jefferson-Morgan in the first round of the Sto-Rox/Northgate Tipoff Tournament Friday.
The Rangers led 26-6 at halftime and outscored J-M, 18-12, over the final two quarters.
Krista McCartney scored seven for the Rockets.
Avella 57, Bentworth 30: Avella scored 21 second-quarter points to build a substantial lead as it defeated Bentworth 57-30 in the Avella Tournament.
The Eagles had three players score in double figures, led by Jordan Rush’s 14 points.
Bailey Lis had 12 points and Bess Lengauer finished with 11.
The only form of consistent offense Bentworth could find went through Jenna Vito, who scored a game-high 15 points.
Greensburg Salem 73, McGuffey 38: The only person Greensburg Salem needed was Megan Kallock.
Kallock outscored the entire McGuffey team – she had 40 points – as host Greensburg Salem defeated the Highlanders 73-38.
The Lions also had secondary scoring from Nikki Mellinger, who had 15 points.
Greensburg Salem pulled away in the second half with 26 points in the third quarter followed by 21 in the fourth.
McGuffey was led by 11 points from senior Mikalah Maxwell.
Cumberland Valley 65, Belle Vernon 34: Abbie Miller scored a game-high 19 points as Cumberland Valley defeated Belle Vernon 65-34 in the McKeesport Tournament.
Cumberland Valley scored 19 points in both the first and second quarters to jump out to put the Leopards in an early hole.
Julie Jekot also reached double figures for Cumberland Valley with 12 points.
Belle Vernon scored half of its points in the second quarter and was led by a team-high 11 from Caitlyn Trombley.
Washington 69, Monessen 25: Washington scored at least 14 points in each quarter as the Prexies defeated Monessen 69-25 in the Charleroi Tournament.
The Prexies took a 35-13 lead into halftime.
Washington’s Carley Allen and Torri Finley led all scorers with 18 points. Randi Thomas scored 12 points for the Prexies, while freshman Kyla Wood added nine.
Monessen was paced by Quitarah Hardison’s team-high seven points.
Burgettstown 47, Mapletown 25: After taking an 11-11 tie into halftime, Burgettstown awoke in the second half and defeated Mapletown 47-25 in the Avella Tournament.
The Blue Devils scored 19 points in the third quarter, then followed the impressive second-half start with another 17 as they continued to pull away.
Malia Castellino led Burgettstown with 13 points.
Kayla Smith had nine points for Mapletown.
