Watkins has double-double in Penn State’s 10th win
Mike Watkins scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Penn State to an 80-65 win over Binghamton Tuesday night.
Tony Carr, Josh Reaves and Shep Garner all chipped in 15 points apiece for the Nittany Lions (10-3), who won their third straight and snapped the Bearcats’ seven-game winning streak.
Garner made 5 of 7 3-pointers and the Nittany Lions shot 57 percent from the floor on 31-for-54 shooting.
J.C. Show led Binghamton (8-5) with 13 points while Tyler Stewart notched 12 and Thomas Bruce added 10 for the Bearcats, who trailed for all but 2:49.
The Nittany Lions opened the first half with an 8-0 run and led 39-36 at halftime.
N.C. State 81, Robert Morris 69: Torin Dorn had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and North Carolina State beat Robert Morris 81-69.
Omer Yurtseven added 12 points and 10 rebounds, Lennard Freeman had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Abdul-Malik Abu finished with 15 points for the Wolfpack (9-3).
They shot 43 percent and built a 48-38 rebounding advantage in bouncing back from a loss to UNC Greensboro three days earlier that snapped a 20-game home winning streak against nonconference opponents.
Matty McConnell had 17 points and four of the Colonials’ season-high-tying 10 3-pointers, and Dachon Burke finished with 12 points.
Robert Morris (6-6) led for nearly 30 minutes before the Wolfpack took control down the stretch, holding the Colonials without a field goal for four crucial minutes.
Yurtseven broke a 57-all tie with a hook shot with just over seven minutes remaining, and that started the 12-1 run that gave N.C. State its first double-figure lead.
Abu’s slam of an alley-oop feed from Braxton Beverly made it 68-58 with 4½ minutes to play.
Duquesne 65, Lamar 64: Mike Lewis II nailed two straight 3-pointers in the final minute as Duquesne scrambled back to take a 65-64 win over visiting Lamar.
Lamar’s Colton Weisbrod completed a 3-point play for a 64-57 lead with 1:54 left. Lewis answered with a layup. He followed that with a steal and drilled a trey to trail 64-62 with 57 seconds remaining. Lamar’s Joe Frenchwood missed a 3-point attempt but Lewis nailed his with :09 left. Frenchwood missed another 3-pointer as time expired.
Lewis finished with 16 points and Rene Castro-Caneddy added 15 for Duquesne (8-3), which won its sixth straight. The Dukes made 7 of 20 from distance; Lamar made 4 of 15. Duquesne made 20 of 34 from the line while the Cardinals were 12 of 23.
Weisbrod finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for Lamar (8-3), which has dropped two straight after winning five in a row.
