Wrestling roundup: Canon-McMillan preps for Kiski with rout of Chartiers Valley

Canon-McMillan used eight pins, including five consecutive in the middle weights, to roll over host Chartiers Valley 66-6 in Class AAA Section 4A Wednesday night.

The win improves the Big Macs to 2-0 in dual meets. Canon-McMillan hosts Kiski, the WPIAL’s top-ranked team in Class AAA, Friday night.

The Big Macs on all but one weight class – there was one no match – against the Colts. Michael Binni (113) and Kenny Haman (120) had falls for C-M in the lower weights. Tim Hristko (138) began the Big Macs’ string of falls in the middle weights. Hristko’s pin was followed by ones from Tanner Rohaley (145), Dimitri Pihiou (152), Mahonri Wolfgramm (160) and Evan Miller (170). Alec Hendel (195) also won by fall.

Fort Cherry 60, Avella 10: There wasn’t much wrestling in the Class AA Section 1 match between Fort Cherry and Avella, but that didn’t stop FC from rolling up a 60-10 victory.

Fort Cherry combined seven forfeits with three pins, including two in the first period.

Jake Tkach (145), Shane Smith (182) and Matt Cook (195) each won by fall for the Rangers.

Avella’s points came on a forfeit and Robbie West’s major decision victory at 170.

Only four bouts were contested with the total wrestling time being 13:36.

McGuffey 72, Mapletown 6: McGuffey earned seven pins as it routed Mapletown 72-6 in a Class AA Section 2A match.

Junior Noah Cline earned the fastest fall of the night in the heavyweight bout, which lasted only 20 seconds.

Freshman Rocco Ferraro (106) didn’t take much longer as he pinned his opponent after only 23 seconds elapsed.

Nate Yagle (113), Aerlious Taylor (126), Mason Burgdolt (145), Dalton Lough (195) and Marshall Mounts (220) each earned falls for the Highlanders.

The lone win of the night for Mapletown came 160 pounds when Kevin Hayes won a 6-0 decision.

Jefferson-Morgan 40, Bentworth 34: Gavin Teasdale and Hunter Thistlethwaite both earned falls as Jefferson-Morgan controlled the middle weights to defeat Bentworth 40-34 in a Class AA Section 2 match.

Teasdale (138) earned his pin in 1:03, while Thistlewaite (152) pinned his opponent in 4:35.

Bentworth earned wins in four of the final five bouts, including a pin from Ashton Lopez (Hvy) and a 17-5 major decision in favor of Jonathan Vargo (195).

Peters Township 66, Baldwin 12: Dan Levine, Brandon Matthews and Luke Mary earned falls for Peters Township as it defeated Baldwin 66-12 in a Class AAA Section 2B match.

The Indians, who won four of the first five bouts by forfeit, extended its lead when Levine (138) pinned Baldwin’s Justin Bochter in 1:54.

Peters Township then earned two consecutive pins at 160 and 170, as Matthews pinned Jamil Khalil in 1:13 and Mary won by fall against Christian Mulholland at the 1:24 mark.

Gehrig Hutchison (182) and Connor Sidoruk (195) earned pins for Baldwin.

Chartiers-Houston 45, South Park 30: Gary Kuntch (160) pinned Craig Lingend in 3:51 in the final bout to give Chartiers-Houston a 45-30 win over South Park in a Class AA Section 1A match.

Kuntch earned one of the two pins on the night for the Bucs, the other belonging to Ty Mazutis (126) in 3:58.

Belle Vernon 44, Thomas Jefferson 21: Belle Vernon had six wrestlers earn falls as the Leopards downed Thomas Jefferson 44-21 in a Class AAA Section 2A match.

The quickest fall of the night came from Scott Joll (170), who pinned Thomas Jefferson’s in 25 seconds.

Ian Maloney (132), Zach Hartman (160), Mason Nickelson (182), Chad Metikosh (220) and Logan Petrosky (Hvy) all earned pins for the Leopards.

Belle Vernon was also paced by an 11-0 major decision by Logan Seliga at 126 pounds over TJ’s Kale Buckiso.

Thomas Jefferson narrowed the gap when Brendan Finnerty (138) won a 6-1 decision over Maverick Selvoski.
