1952 – Larry Krutko scores three touchdowns and adds four extra points as Cumberland Township High School crushes Wilmerding 40-14 to remain undefeated and earn a spot in the WPIAL Class B football championship game. Krutko scores on runs of 45, 15 and 14 yards for the Mikes (10-0).

1970 – Forty-three members of the Marshall football team die when their chartered plane crashes in Kenova, W.Va.

1975 – Ted Giles falls on a fumble in the end zone for a third-quarter touchdown and Jim Pritts adds a fourth-quarter scoring run as Beth-Center defeats Beaver 13-0 in the WPIAL Class AA semifinals at Bethel Park. It’s Beth-Center’s 16th consecutive victory.

1981 – Chartiers-Houston outlasts visiting Mercer 24-23 in three overtimes in the first round of the WPIAL Class A football playoffs. Mercer misses an extra-point kick in the third OT. Chartiers-Houston quarterback Kurt Kesneck throws for two touchdowns, runs for another score, kicks a 30-yard field goal and boots three extra points.

1986 – Mike Sanders catches an eight-yard touchdown pass from Doug Clish and returns a punt 62 yards for another score as Beth-Center defeats Ellwood City 19-7 in the WPIAL Class AA semifinals at Ambridge High School.

1992 – In its first WPIAL football playoff appearance, West Greene wins 35-34 in double overtime at Serra Catholic. The winning points come on a two-point conversion run by Rodney Wilson.

1997 – R.B. Hursh’s 32-yard field goal in the mud with 15 seconds left capped a Fort Cherry rally and gave the Rangers a 25-24 upset over two-time defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Farrell in the WPIAL Class A semifinals at Rochester High School.

1998 – John Luckhardt coaches his final football game for Washington & Jefferson, a 61-0 rout of Thiel. In 17 seasons with the Presidents, Luckhardt leads W&J to a 137-37-2 record and 11 NCAA Division III playoff appearances, including two trips to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

2001 – The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Alexi Kovalev has his second hat trick in as many nights to rally the Penguins to a 3-3 tie against the New York Islanders at Mellon Arena.
