1949 – Army quarterback Arnold “Pope” Galiffa of Donora is named to the first team in the United Press All-America college football selections.

1971 – Danny Murtaugh, architect of two World Series championships and a divisional title for the Pittsburgh Pirates, resigns as the team’s manager because of health reasons. He is replaced by Bill Virdon. Murtaugh missed 16 games during the 1971 season because of a heart murmur.

2002 – Penn State’s Larry Johnson becomes the ninth running back in NCAA Division I-A history to run for 2,000 yards in a season when he gains 279 yards and scores four TDs in a 61-7 win over Michigan State.
