Small college roundup: ODU hands No. 4 Cal first loss
The Ohio Dominican women’s basketball team finished on a nine-point run to end the first half as it went on to defeat No. 4 California 93-75 in a nonconference game Wednesday night in Columbus, Ohio.
The hot-shooting Panthers, who finished nearly 48 percent from the field, matched Cal (5-1) shot for shot in the final two quarters to hand the Vulcans their first loss of the season.
Ohio Dominican (3-2) was paced by four players that reached double figures, including a game-high 21 points from Alexa Fisher. Sarah Futscher had 18 points, while Darian Rose and Megan Eyre each had 13.
Cal was led by junior guard Jiahna Flood-Francis’ 17 points. The Vulcans offense was hindered when foul trouble forced leading scorer Shatara Parsons to the bench for most of the game. Parsons, who only played 19 minutes, finished with 16 points.
Waynesburg 57, Grove City 47: Rachel Eng scored a career-high 16 points as the senior’s third straight double-digit game led the Waynesburg women’s basketball team to a 57-47 win over Grove City.
Mackenna Drazich, an Avella graduate, and Addy Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, followed Eng in scoring with 14 points each.
Despite being outscored by Grove City (0-2, 1-4) by five points, 22-17, in the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets already had a sizable lead built up from only allowing two points in the first quarter.
