Reports: Mets offer Callaway manager job
It appears the New York Mets have settled on their choice for a manager.
Several media outlets are reporting the team has offered the job to Cleveland Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway. The New York Post was the first to report the Mets were in talks with Callaway, saying a deal is being finalized.
When contacted Sunday, multiple Mets officials declined to comment.
With his contract set to expire, Terry Collins stepped down at the end of the season after seven years as Mets manager and accepted a position as a special assistant to general manager Sandy Alderson.
The 42-year-old Callaway has been Cleveland’s pitching coach for the past five seasons under highly successful manager Terry Francona. Led by ace right-hander Corey Kluber, the Indians led the major leagues with a 3.30 ERA this season, one year after reaching the World Series.
In golf
Bernhard Langer made a 15-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th hole Sunday to overcome a mediocre round and win the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the first event in the PGA Tour Champions’ Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.
Langer, even par for the day before getting to the easiest hole on The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course, beat Scott Verplank by one shot. Verplank, playing two groups ahead of Langer, shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 to erase a five-shot deficit, but missed short birdie putts on the 17th and 18th holes.
Langer followed his second-round 63 with a 70 to finish at 16 under. The victory was the sixth this season and 35th on the tour for the 60-year-old Langer, and clinched the top seed in the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix.
- Eun-Hee Ji fired a 7-under-par 65 to win the Taiwan Championship on Sunday for her first LPGA title since the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open.
Ji, who had a six-stroke lead heading into the final round, carded seven birdies to finish at 17-under 271, six strokes ahead of Lydia Ko, who also closed with a 65.
Nailers gain point
The Wheeling Nailers secured at least one point for the fourth game in a row, but their quest for a fourth straight win came up short in a 2-1 overtime loss to host Reading Sunday afternoon.
Nolan Zajac snapped a 1-1 tie at the 1:12 mark of overtime. Reid Gardiner had the lone goal for the Nailers.
Hamilton wins
U.S. Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton further tightened his control on the Formula One season championship Sunday, winning the U.S. Grand Prix ahead of title rival Sebastian Vettel, who finished second in a race he said he had to win.
The Mercedes driver continued his absolute dominance of the Circuit of the Americas, winning at the track for the fifth time since 2012 and fourth year in a row.
The victory extended Hamilton’s championship lead over Vettel to 66 points with three races left. While mathematically still possible, Vettel’s title hopes are nearly wiped out.
In the NBA
Allen Crabbe scored 20 points, DeMarre Carroll had 17 and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Atlanta Hawks 116-104 Sunday.
Caris LeVert and D’Angelo Russell each had 16 points to help the Nets improve to 2-1 with their second straight victory.
- The NBA has fined Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving $25,000 for responding to a fan with inappropriate language.
Kiki VanDeWeghe, the NBA’ executive vice president of basketball operations, announced the fine Sunday.
Irving spoke to a fan at halftime of Boston’s 102-92 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.
Murata beats N’Dam to win WBA middleweight title
Japanese boxer Ryota Murata defeated France’s Hassan N’Dam by technical knockout on Sunday to win the WBA middleweight title.
Murata stopped N’Dam after seven rounds to become the first middleweight champion from Japan in 22 at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan. He stunned N’Dam with a series of combinations before the bout was stopped after the seventh round when N’Dam’s corner threw in the towel.
