High school baseball roundup: West Greene knocks off defending champ Jeannette
Zack Abbott drove in three runs in a four-run third to help West Greene knock of defending WPIAL Class A champion Jeannette, 7-6, in Section 2-A.
Gavin Scott came on in the fifth inning and helped put out a Jayhawk rally that made it a one-run game.
Patrick Brady doubled for West Greene (1-0, 1-2). Trey Cunningham took the loss for Jeannette (0-1, 0-1).
Beth-Center 3, Carmichaels 2: Bailey Lincoski went 3-for-4 and drove in what stood as the winning run with two outs in the top of the seventh as Beth-Center edged Carmichaels, 3-2, in Section 1-AA.
Dylan Dingle struck out six in six innings and Ryan Ross got the save for B-C (1-0, 2-1). Cam Palmer and Anthony Dellapenna each had a double.
Carmichaels fell to 0-2, 0-1 in the section.
California 10, Chartiers-Houston 2: Richard Stimmel struck out five in five innings and drove in three runs during California’s 10-2 win over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 1-AA game.
Stimmel had a double and two singles for California (1-0, 1-1) and Jacob Swartz doubled.
Jim Sadler went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Bucs (0-1, 0-2).
Fort Cherry 13, Bentworth 2: Hunter Terpack had a double and three RBI as Fort Cherry was able to finally play, and win, its first game of the season, 13-2, over Section 1-AA opponent Bentworth.
The Rangers scored five runs in their first inning of the season, then another six runs in the fourth, which eventually ended the game early because of the mercy rule.
Hunter Terpack had a double and three RBI for Fort Cherry. Cam Schaub, Blake McElhaney and Aaron Baird also doubled for the Rangers.
McElhaney also picked up the win on the mound with four strikeouts in his five innings.
Isiah Russel had a double for Bentworth (0-1, 0-2).
Jefferson-Morgan 10, Geibel Catholic 0: Jake Broadwater struck out 10 batters to lead Jefferson-Morgan to a 10-0 mercy-rule win over visiting Section 2-A rival Geibel Catholic.
The junior righty earned the win for the Rockets, allowing zero runs and three walks in four innings. Ten of Broadwater’s 12 outs came via the strikeout.
The offense was led by freshmen Bryce Bedillion and Logan Rhodes, both of whom had two RBI. Rhodes, Justin Maddich and Zack Gamble each hit doubles for the Rockets (1-0, 2-0), who scored at least one run in all five innings. Gamble also knocked in two runs.
Jesse Yourish took the loss for Geibel (0-1, 0-2), striking out one batter and walking one in his start.
