College baseball
California University swept a PSAC West Division doubelehader Sunday over Clarion, 13-6 and 8-1, at Wild Things Park.
Levi Krause homered and doubled, and Chris Wastchak hit a home run for Cal (7-5, 16-11) in the opener.
In the second game, freshman Hunter Robinson threw a four-hit complete game and Eric Fairman hit a grand slam. Robinson walked one and struck out three.
- Washington & Jefferson defeated host Thiel 11-0 in the opening game of a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader before falling, 4-3, in the second game.
The split puts W&J’s overall record at 14-9. The Presidents are 7-1 in the PAC. Thiel is 4-2, 8-12.
Bryce Schnatterly (4-0) threw his second complete game of the season int he opener, tossing a four-hit shutout. He did not issue a walk and struck out seven.
Dan Trettel, Ryan Sciullo, Mark Merlino and Luke Zahren each drove in two runs for the Presidents.
Trailing 4-2 entering the ninth inning of the second game, W&J loaded the bases with two outs and then scored when Nick Krugh raced home on a wild pitch. Thiel, however, managed to hold on for the win.
Sciullo had two hits and two more RBI.
- Westminster and Waynesburg split a PAC doubleheader. Westminster won the opener 4-3 in 10 innings but the Yellow Jackets took the second game, 8-4.
Westminster is 3-3 in the PAC and 8-7 overall. Waynesburg is 1-7, 5-17.
Tyler Reis homered in the second game for Waynesburg and Justin Buberal had three hits.
Women’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson had its 21-match Ohio River Lacrosse Conference regular season winning streak snapped with a 10-7 loss Sunday at Transylvania.
The Presidents were undefeated in the conference each of the last two seasons after winning the final matchup of 2015 to Transylvania. W&J falls to 3-1 in the league and 6-3 overall.
Rae LaRochelle and Caroline Kallos did all the scoring for W&J as LaRochelle had four goals and Kallos netted three.
