In softball

Bailey Parshall struck out 15 and only allowed three singles as Belle Vernon defeated Keystone Oaks, 2-0, in a Class 4A Section 2 game.

The Leopards scattered 10 hits through the seven innings but were able to get solo home runs from Jordan French and Jaelynn Clegg.

Parshall, who didn’t walk a batter, also had two doubles and a single for Belle Vernon (2-1, 4-1).

The lone hits for Keystone Oaks (0-4, 2-5) were from Mario Fratangelo, Alexis Butler and Sophia Pitt.

  • Logan Hartman pitched all seven innings and went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run to lead defending WPIAL champion Frazier past Chartiers-Houston, 14-5, in a Class 2A Section 3 rescheduled game.

The Commodores, who defeated C-H in all three games the two played a season ago, scored five runs in the third and seven in the seventh inning.

Chartiers-Houston (3-1, 5-1) scored four runs in the third inning to cut the deficit to 6-4 but were doomed by the six errors it committed on the day.

Rylee Evans also had a three-hit game for Frazier (3-0, 4-3).

Kaci Alderson went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Bucs. She was the only player for C-H to have multiple hits.

  • Eight players for Canon-McMillan recorded a hit as the Big Macs used two big innings to defeat Class 6A Section 1 rival Peters Township, 11-5.

The Big Macs scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead then created more separation as PT crept closer with a five-run sixth.

The top two hitters in the C-M lineup, Erica Haught and Lindsay Schmidt, each had a pair of hits. Schmidt reached base safely in all four of her plate appearances.

Katelyn Greaves and Elli Kotar each had a home run for the Big Macs, who improve to 2-0 in the section and 3-0 overall.

Peters Township (2-3, 4-5) was paced by production from No. 5 hitter Haley Cecere, who went 4-for-4. Jill Years also had a pair of hits for the Indians, including a home run.

  • Kylie Poland, Cameron Meier and Sloan Altman each hit a home run as Trinity defeated Ringgold, 8-2, in a Class 5A Section 2 contest.

The Hillers scored one run in each of the first four innings, then scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth.

Payton Barr went 3-for-4 with a double for Trinity (3-1, 6-4).

Ringgold falls to 0-4 in section and 1-4 overall.

  • Dana Vatakis had three hits, four RBI and scored twice as Monessen defeated Avella, 10-1, in a Class A Section 2 game.

The Greyhounds only held a 3-0 lead until the seventh inning when they exploded for seven runs.

Vatakis also struck out 15 in the circle for Monessen (3-1, 4-1).

Avella is 0-4 in section and 0-5 overall.

  • South Fayette defeated Carrick 15-0 in a Class 4A Section 2 contest to end a three-game losing streak.

The Lions are 1-2 in section play and 3-4 overall.

  • MacKenzie Crile had eight strikeouts to lead Beth-Center to a 3-0 victory over Class 2A Section 3 game against Burgettstown.

Bailey Minerd and Sidney Frazee had a pair of hits for Beth-Center (1-3, 1-4).

Burgettstown drops to 1-3 in section and 1-6 overall.

In baseball

Frazier scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead and defeat Class 2 Section 1 opponent Bentworth, 7-6.

Down to their last at-bat trailing by four runs, 5-1, the Commodores took advantage of three Bentworth errors in the final inning before a Mason Kelly two-run double gave them the lead.

Frazier (1-1, 2-2) then held off a rally from the Bearcats in the bottom half of the seventh inning to secure the victory.

Bentworth (0-3, 1-4) only had five hits and took advantage of early sloppiness from the Commodores, who committed five errors in the game.

  • Matt Primm dominated on the mound and South Fayette racked up 10 hits to defeat Ambridge in five innings, 10-0, in a Class 4A Section 2 contest.

Primm only surrendered four hits and struck out six in his five innings to earn the victory.

Mitch Dunay led South Fayette (3-1, 5-3) at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

Richie Dell and Primm also had a multi-hit game for the Lions, each with two hits.

Ambridge is 0-4.

  • The top five hitters in the Carmichaels’ lineup had eight hits as the Mikes Class 2A Section 1 foe Fort Cherry from the ranks of the unbeaten, 10-4.

After quickly giving up its four-run lead in the third inning, Carmichaels scored a run in the fifth and five runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Rangers.

Matthew Barrish went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Mikes. Nick Mundell went 2-for-4 with two RBI and earned the win on the mound. Al Cree also had a pair of hits for Carmichaels (2-1, 2-2).

Shane Smith had an RBI double for Fort Cherry (3-1, 3-1), which committed six errors.

  • Cam Pies went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to lead Montour past Trinity, 11-5, for its first win in Class 5A Section 2.

Taking a tied game, 2-2, into the fourth inning, the Spartans scored four runs to take the lead for good.

Logan Vietmeier hit a home run for Montour (1-1, 1-1).

The Hillers were led by junior Jared Watson, who went 2-for-4 and hit his second home run of the season.

Brandon Robaugh had a double for Trinity (1-3, 1-4).

  • Richie Stimmell had a triple and three RBI as California defeated Burgettstown, 13-5, in a Class 2A Section 1 contest.

The Trojans used two innings to do most of their damage, scoring a total of 11 runs in the fourth and fifth.

Brandon Powell earned the win for California (2-2, 2-3).

Jacob Swartz, Payton Conte and Jacob Piktel each had two singles for the Trojans.

Burgettstown (1-2, 2-2) was paced by Ryan Lounder, Dante Gianfrancesco and Hunter Ayers who each had a pair of hits. Lounder had three RBI.

  • In a back-and-forth slugfest, Belle Vernon scored five runs in the fifth inning and held on to defeat Keystone Oaks, 13-12, in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

Keystone Oaks added a run in the top of the seventh inning but couldn’t score the tying run despite getting runners into scoring position.

Mason Brooks led the Golden Eagles with four hits. Four separate players for Keystone Oaks (1-3, 2-3) had a multi-hit game.

Jake Rathway and Garrett Greco each had three hits for Belle Vernon (3-0, 3-0).

Wild Things sign pitcher

The Washington Wild Things have signed pitcher Doug Willey, a former Los Angeles Angels farmhand, for the upcoming Frontier League season.

Willey was selected in the 32nd round of the 2016 draft out of Arkansas University and played in he Pioneer League before having Tommy John surgery in September that forced him to miss all of 2017.

In his senior season at Arkansas, Willey struck out 29 batters in 28 innings with a 3.49 ERA. He played at Franklin Pierce, a Division II school in New Hampshire, for three seasons before making the transition to the Southeastern Conference.

• Macee Chesney drove in Sara Chory with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Mapletown a 4-3 win over California in Section 1-A.

Chory, who went 2-for-4, tripled before Chesney’s hit. It was Chesney’s fourth hit of the game for the Maples (2-0, 4-0). Taylor Vanata doubled and went 2-for-4, Elisa Clark wen 3-for-3 and Katherine Fox and Kylie Stover each had a double.

Ashley Gush hit a solo home run for California (1-2, 1-3).

In college baseball

The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team tied La Roche 13-13 before the nonconference game was called due to darkness after the ninth inning.

La Roche scored three runs in the ninth, which tied the game and would have extended it to extra innings.

The Presidents took a 12-9 lead with a six-run sixth inning.

Justin Griffin went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI for W&J (15-9-1).

Shane Roebuc, Johnathan Me and Gino Quahlie each had three hits for La Roche (16-5-1).

In college softball

The Washington & Jefferson College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Presidents’ Athletic Conference foe Bethany, 2-1 and 10-5.

In Game 1, trailing 2-1 entering the final inning, the Presidents threatened with runners in scoring position.

Brooke Lapia and Taylor Andres, who suffered the loss in the circle, each had two hits for W&J.

In Game 2, Bethany scored all 10 of its runs in a span of four innings. The first four hitters in the Bison lineup combined for seven hits.

Rachel Johnson and Danielle Kochka each had three hits for W&J, which falls to 2-4 in the PAC and 6-12 overall.

Bethany improves to 3-3 in the PAC and 10-10 overall.

In the majors

Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly and the Yankees’ Tyler Austin have been suspended for their roles in the brawl between the AL East rivals at Fenway Park.

Kelly was suspended for six games and Austin received a five-game penalty. Each player appealed their punishments, and they are eligible to play while their appeals are considered.

Major League Baseball announced the discipline on Thursday.

Kelly, Austin, Red Sox manager Alex Cora and Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin also were fined. Four players on the disabled list also were fined for entering the field during the skirmish: Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, and Red Sox infielders Xander Bogaerts, Dustin Pedroia, and Marco Hernandez.

In the seventh inning of New York’s 10-7 win on Wednesday night, Kelly actually threw at Austin twice. The first pitch missed, but the second one drilled him in the back. The designated hitter then charged the mound, prompting benches to empty.

  • Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer and drove in three runs, helping the Cleveland Indians beat Detroit 9-3 for their 11th consecutive victory against the Tigers.

The Indians completed a four-game series sweep and improved to 31-10 against their AL Central rival since 2016. Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer, and Trevor Bauer (1-1) struck out seven while pitching seven innings of two-run ball.

Lindor hit his fourth career leadoff homer off Michael Fulmer (1-2).

Jason Kipnis and Bradley Zimmer each had three hits for the Indians.

  • DJ LeMahieu hit two home runs and drove in a career-high four runs to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 5-1 victory over the Wash
  • ington Nationals on Thursday.

Chad Bettis (2-0) allowed one run and three hits over seven innings as Colorado took the opener of a four-game series.

LeMahieu’s four-hit game matched a career high.
