W&J announces
Hall of Fame class
The Washington & Jefferson College Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee announced Friday the five members of its 20th induction class.
John Bord ’73 (football), Bill Dukett (coach/administrator), Jennifer (Pergola) Kirschner ’06 (soccer), Aaron Krepps ’06 (football), and Demas McVay ’55 (swimming) will all be honored Sept. 21 in a ceremony at the Rossin Campus Center Allen Ballroom.
“Congratulations to these members of our W&J family who will join 125 previous inductees to the athletic hall of fame,” said athletic director Scott McGuiness. “I thank our hall of fame committee for the work they’ve done to elect our 20th group into our prestigious hall.”
Bord is the recipient of the Robert M. Murphy Award for his election to the hall of fame. The award is named in honor of Robert M. Murphy, graduate manager of Washington & Jefferson athletics for nearly two decades. Murphy, a 1906 W&J graduate, was general secretary and graduate athletic trainer at W&J from 1906 until the time of his death in 1925. The award bestows special recognition to selected athletes, male or female, who exemplify outstanding lifetime achievements. Bord was a two-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference center for the football team and the leading blocker for one of the program’s top passing combinations, W&J Hall of Famers quarterback Don Kasperik and receiver Rich Pocock. Bord has worked as the prosecuting attorney in Taylor County, W.Va., since 1998 after 13 years as assistant prosecuting attorney. After graduating from the California Western School of Law, Bord was as a magistrate court judge. He was recently named as the statewide liaison to the National Football League and Major League Baseball, assisting the leagues with investigations of criminal matters, helping to identify false and frivolous claims.
Dukett was a member of the football coaching staff from 1982 to 1998 and helped guide the Presidents to national prominence, including two trips to the Stagg Bowl. He also spent 10 years as the head track and field coach and nine seasons as head men’s and women’s golf coach. After eight years in development, Dukett worked his final seven years before retirement as the W&J Director of Athletics. In football, W&J won 137 games with Dukett as assistant coach. He led six golf teams to PAC championships and was named PAC Golf Coach of the Year six times.
Kirschner started 77 consecutive matches and concluded her career as only the second W&J women’s soccer player to be named first team All-PAC four times. Kirschner scored 59 goals (4th in school history) and had 24 assists for 142 points. Kirschner, who set a school record with 15 game-winning goals, led W&J to its first postseason appearance in the 2005 ECAC Division III Tournament.
Krepps earned All-America accolades during his junior and senior seasons. The 2004 PAC and ECAC Southwest Player of the Year had 181 career receptions for 2,788 and 49 total touchdowns. He amassed 5,638 all-purpose yards and ended his career with a 35-game reception streak. In 2005, Krepps was selected to participate in the Aztec Bowl, a Division III All-Star Game. Krepps is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Bluffton College.
McVay was a two-sport athlete as a four-year swimming letterwinner and a two-year golf standout. He scored 105 points in dual meets during his senior year in which he earned first-place finishes in 16 races. McVay set the school record for the 100 freestyle (56.20) and the 60 freestyle (30.90). He was team captain for swimming during his final two years.
High school softball
Sophia Godzak and Bailey Parshall hit solo home runs in the eighth inning as Belle Vernon broke a scoreless tie to defeat Mt. Lebanon, 2-0, in non-section play Friday afternoon.
The home runs represented two of the five hits for the Leopards.
Parshall kept Belle Vernon (7-2) in the game by dominating in the circle. She surrendered one hit and had 11 strikeouts.
The lone hit for Mt. Lebanon (4-3) was a single from Megan Detrick.
- Ella Brookman homered, Jaylese Lombardi drove in three runs and Kaitlyn Dittrich pitched five strong innings as Chartiers-Houston defeated visiting Beth-Center 11-1 in Section 3-AA.
After Beth-Center (1-5, 1-6) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning, Charters-Houston (5-1, 8-1) dominated the rest of the way with a 12-hit attack. Madyson Smith was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI, Brookman ended the game with a two-run homer in the sixth, Lombardi had a triple and Karlyn Bayer was 2-for-2 with a double.
Dittrich allowed three hits and struck out nine.
Losing pitcher MacKenzie Crile had two hits, including a triple, for Beth-Center.
- Jessia Dean struck out nine and held visiting Waynesburg scoreless over the final four innings as South park defeated the Raiders 7-2 in a battle for first place in Section 3-AAA.
Waynesburg (4-1, 6-3) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run double by Rachel Elsenheimer, who went 2-for-4.
South Park (5-0, 5-1), however, scored three runs in the bottom of the third and two each in the fifth and sixth innings. Kaitlyn Morrison was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI for the Eagles. Kelly Mesick had a double.
- Jefferson-Morgan scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for a 7-5 victory over California in Section 2-A.
It was the first section win for J-M (1-4, 2-4) and the Rockets did it by overcoming a 3-0 deficit after three innings. J-M scored one run in the fourth and used the big fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Krista McCartney led the J-M offense with three singles. Winning pitcher Cait Dugan had a double.
Kristina Luko had a double for Cal (1-4, 1-5).
- Winning pitcher Bri Butler worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning and helped her cause by driving in a run and scoring another as Keystone Oaks edged host South Fayette, 4-3, in Class 4A Section 2.
South Fayette (1-5, 3-7) had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh but Butler got her fourth strikeout of the game and a flyout to secure the first section win for KO (1-5, 3-6).
Butler had a triple among her two hits. Lauren Bennett and Charley Cribben each had a double for South Fayette and Madison Potteiger had two singles.
High school baseball
Ringgold and Belle Vernon moved into a first-place tie in Section 3-AAAA.
Ringgold smacked 14 hits and scored in all but one inning to defeat West Mifflin 15-5 in six innings Friday, ending the Titans’ five-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, Belle Vernon rolled at McGuffey, winning 12-1 in five innings.
Ringgold and Belle Vernon each are 5-1 in the section and percentage points ahead of West Mifflin, which is 6-2.
At Ringgold, the Rams’ Bob Boyer went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs, Luke Winterbottom had two hits and drove in three runs, Jake Mayer doubled and scored three times.
Ryan Varley had a triple for Ringgold (6-1 overall), and Koby Bubash, Josh Peters and Anthony Vavasori each doubled. Pitchers Chase Angotti and Peters combined on a three-hitter. Angotti had seven strikeouts as the Rams defeated the Titans for the second time this season.
At McGuffey, Belle Vernon used a pair of four-run innings and Jordan Hoffman’s three-hitter to stymie McGuffey.
Trevor Schrock led Belle Vernon at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and two RBI. Josh Hoffman also doubled and Garrett Greco was 3-for-3.
Luke Wagner had a double and two of McGuffey’s three hits. The Highlanders fell to 1-5 in section and 3-7 overall.
- With Canon-McMillan down to its final strike in the top of the seventh inning, Ian Hess hit a three-run double to the gap in right center and scored one pitch later on Cam Weston’s single as the Big Macs rallied for a 4-1 victory over Upper St. Clair in a Class 6A Section 3 game at Boyce-Mayview Park.
USC (4-3, 10-3) led 1-0 in the top of the seventh when Hess delivered on a 3-2 pitch with two outs.
Zach Rohaley, the third C-M pitcher of the day, struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn a save. Brandon Kline faced only one batter, throwing four pitches to end the bottom of the sixth inning and get credited as the winning pitcher. Canon-McMillan starter Cam Weston struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings and allowed only three hits and a first-inning run.
The win improves Canon-Mac to 5-2 in section and 8-3 overall.
- Garrett Miller threw a five-hit shutout and Colin Craven belted a solo homer as Peters Township defeated Baldwin 4-0 in Class 6A Section 3.
Miller helped boost the playoff chances of the Indians (3-4, 6-7) by scattering five singles and three walks. He struck out four.
Craven blast led PT’s nine-hit attack. Dax Ploskina, Joe Ehland and Tom Colcombe each had two singles and scored a run.
Baldwin is 1-5 in section, 1-7 overall.
- Carmichaels moved into sole possession of first place in Section 1-AA with a 12-4 victory over visiting Bentworth.
The Mikes (6-1, 7-2) used five different pitchers, who combined on a five-hitter. Starter Logan Mayhle struck out five in two innings and reliever Dylan Wilson fanned four in two innings.
Gavin Pratt led Carmichaels at the plate with two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI. Al Cree had two singles and a pair of RBI.
Carmichaels forged a 5-0 lead after two innings, but Bentworth (0-6, 1-7) pulled to within 5-4 in the fourth. The Mikes secured the win by scoring three times in the fourth and tacking on four runs over the next two innings.
- After being held scoreless through three innings, Beth-Center erupted for 16 runs over the final four frames to roll over Frazier 16-6 in Section 1-AA.
Beth-Center (3-2, 4-3) trailed 4-0 after three innings but scored four in the fourth, two in the fifth and broke the game open with an eight-run sixth inning. The Bulldogs had eight different players drive in runs. Anthony Dellapenna led the way with a double and three RBI. Dylan Dingle had a triple, double and two RBI, Hunter Bowen smacked two doubles, drove in a pair and scored three times.
Frazier (1-3, 2-4) had 12 hits but the Commodores left 10 runners on base.
- Greensburg Central Catholic scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and remained undefeated in Section 2-A with a 19-3 five-inning win over Monessen in the second game of a doubleheader. GCC won the opener 11-1.
Thomas Voelker went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three runs and three RBI for GCC (5-0, 5-2). Bryce Kurpiel had three singles and drove in four runs.
Marcus Tansmore had two hits for Monessen (2-3, 3-4).
In the opener, Antonio Cavallo threw a three-hitter and Kurpiel went 4-for-4 with a double and five RBI.
- Josh Colletti hit a line-drive, walk-off single to center field with two outs in the eighth inning to score Brian Price and give Chartiers-Houston a 5-4 victory over Burgettstown in Section 1-AA.
Colletti also was the winning pitcher with a pair of scoreless innings.
Trailing by one run in the seventh inning, Chartiers-Houston tied the game at 5-5 on a Noah Minney single that scored Colletti with two outs.
Dante Gianfrancesco had a double for Burgettstown (1-5, 2-5).
Jimmy Sadler went 1-for-3 and scored two runs for Chartiers-Houston (4-3, 5-4).
- Sophomore Cooper Sharp pitched a complete game and led Washington to an upset victory over Section 3-AAA rival Charleroi, 8-4.
Sharp struck out six and only allowed four hits.
Keaton Riley and Hunter Perry each had a double for Charleroi (4-2, 7-2).
Alex Crawford led Washington (2-3, 3-6) by going 3-for-4 with three RBI. John Griffin and Mike Allen each had two hits.

- strong innings and hit a two-run home run to lead California to an 8-5 win over Section 1-AA foe Fort Cherry.
The Rangers held a 3-2 lead after five innings, then California (5-2, 5-3) scored a handful of runs in the sixth to take the lead for the remainder of the game.
Powell drove in four runs for the Trojans, who are tied with Fort Cherry (5-2, 5-2) for second place in the section behind Carmichaels.
Fort Cherry’s Hunter Terpack was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
- Hopewell used five consecutive hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to score five runs and defeat South Fayette, 10-6, in Class 4A Section 2.
The Vikings blew a five-run lead after two innings, then collected five straight singles to open the sixth before South Fayette (5-2, 7-4) could record an out.
Ryan Kokoski and Eli Snider each had three hits for the Lions, who had their four-game winning streak end.
Jake McGovern and Tyler Beck had a pair of hits for Hopewell (4-3, 6-6).
- Jeannette used four hits and two walks to score five runs in the fourth inning to avenge a one-run loss earlier in the season, defeating West Greene, 11-6, in Section 2-A.
The big blow in the fourth was a two-run double by Jeannette’s Drake Petrillo.
Derrick Miller earned the win on the mound for the defending WPIAL champion Jayhawks (4-1, 6-1). He had six strikeouts.
Christian Fox, Patrick Brady and Matt Gillin each had a double for West Greene (2-3, 3-4).
- Mapletown starting pitcher Brian Bogden shined under the lights at Wild Things Park and led the Maples to their first win, a 12-2 victory in five innings over Geibel in Section 2-A.
Bogden struck out nine and limited Geibel to four hits.
Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the third, Mapletown (1-4, 1-6) exploded for four runs. The Maples then scored six runs in the fifth to end the game.
Kevin Hayes had a double for the Maples. Bogden helped his own cause with a triple.
The lone extra-base hit for Geibel (0-4, 0-5) was a double by Isaiah Krizner.
College softball
A go-ahead run on a wild pitch and a six-run eighth inning propelled Washington & Jefferson to 5-3 and 13-7 extra-inning wins at Thiel in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday. Both games went eight innings.
W&J improves to 5-7 in the PAC and 9-15 overall.
With the opener tied 3-3 and one out in the eighth inning, Rachel Johnson and Dana Parker scored on wild pitches to give W&J the win.
Thiel scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh of the second game to force extra innings. Jamie Smith gave the Presidents the lead again with an RBI single. A fielder’s choice scored another run, which was followed by two-run doubles from both Johnson and Brooke McCleester to give W&J a 13-7 lead.
College baseball
California was swept in a PSAC West doubleheader Friday at Gannon, 12-3 and 5-0.
The Vulcans have dropped six consecutive games, falling to 7-11 in conference play and 18-17 overall.
In Game 1, Gannon designated hitter Nate Cardy went 4-for-4 with a triple and a home run to drive in five runs for the Golden Knights. He also scored three times.
Leadoff hitter Austin Logan and Bill Hitman led Cal with a pair of hits, including a solo home run from Litman in the fifth inning.
Gannon starting pitcher David Cricks dominated the Vulcans in Game 2, only allowing five hits while striking out seven.
Cricks was able to pitch with a lead from the first inning after Kyle Cox hit a two-run homer that gave Gannon a 2-0 lead.
Gannon improves to 12-6 in the PSAC and 23-12 overall.
Youth baseball
Preston Burgard hit a pair of doubles to lead Ace Sporting Goods to a 9-5 win over Chambers Insurance in a Washington Pony game Friday night.
Tommy Miller was the winning pitcher for Ace Sporting Goods.
