College track

Waynesburg’s women’s track and field team won its third-straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference outdoor team title Thursday at the conference championships held in new Wilmington.

Heading into Thursday, Waynesburg held a 10-point advantage in the team standings and won the title by 26 points over runner-up Westminster.

Senior Addy Knetzer capped a remarkable collegiate athletic career with her fourth Most Outstanding Performer in the field events award. She won the shot put (42-6), was the runner-up in the discus (122-10) and fourth in the javelin (122-11).

Angie Marchetti won the 1,500 meters in 4:49.38 and the 800 in 2:19.35. Julie Gerber won her second race in as many days, dominating the field in the 5,000 meters. Her time of 18:16.14 was almost 17 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Gerber won the 10,000 meters Wednesday.

Liz Trump edged teammate Elinore Loch in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:59.22. Katherine Fair won the 400 hurdles (1:06.66).

Waynesburg’s Michelle Cross was named PAC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.

  • California University’s Julie Friend qualified for the NCAA Championships and broke the PSAC record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the Penn Relays Thursday night.

Friend ran 10:19.12 to finish sixth overall in the event, which featured more than 30 runners from all three NCAA divisions, plus professional runners.

Pitt gives AD

6-year contract

The University of Pittsburgh signed athletic director Heather Lyke to a six-year contract, which will keep her at the university through at least 2024.

“Heather is leading an ambitious charge to transform Pitt Athletics, and her success here is just beginning,” said Chancellor Patrick Gallagher. “I am thrilled that she will continue to push our athletics programs to new heights-and spur positive change for our student-athletes and our university community-for years to come.”

High school baseball

Junior Cam Weston hit three of Canon-McMillan’s six home runs as the Big Macs overpowered Baldwin in five innings, 14-3, in a Class 6A Section 3 contest Friday afternoon.

Weston, a Michigan recruit, went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and eight RBI. Ian Hess, Nick Serafino and Greydon Piechnick all homered for C-M (7-2, 10-4). Hess also went 3-for-3, drove in three runs, scored four times and was the winning pitcher.

The lone extra-base hit for Baldwin (2-7, 2-9) was a first-inning homer by Jordan Rush.

  • Mike Primm hit a tiebreaking RBI single during South Fayette’s three-run top of the ninth inning and the Lions remained in contention for the Section 2-AAAA title with a 5-3 victory over New Castle.

South Fayette (8-2, 10-4) has won three in a row and seven of eight. The Lions fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but their pitching staff held New Castle for the next seven innings, allowing only a ninth-inning run.

The Lions scored twice in the fourth and the score remained 2-2 until the ninth. Singles by Richie Dell and Tyler Bedillion gave South Fayette two on with two outs, when Primm dropped in his goa-ahead single. Ryan Kokoski and Joey Alcorn followed with run-scoring hits to give South Fayette a three-run advantage.

Dell, the starter, and Kokoski, the reliever and winner, combined on a seven-hitter. They walked only two and struck out 13. Mitch Dunay and Christian Gabriel each had a double for the Lions.

  • Section 1-AA leader Carmichaels scored eight runs over the first two innings and went on to a 13-5 victory over visiting California.

The Mikes (8-1, 8-2) have won eight in a row and play at second-place Fort Cherry Saturday afternoon. Carmichaels combined nine hits with nine walks by California pitchers.

Nick Mundell had a double and drove in three, Dylan Wilson was 2-for-3 wqith a double and two RBI to pace the Mikes.

Derrick Hammitt had a double for California (5-4, 5-5).

Pitchers Matthew Barrish and Wilson combined on a seven-hitter.

  • Rochester made the most of six hits, including a three-run triple by Tanner Richko, to defeat host Avella, 13-3, in a five-inning Section 3-A game.

Rochester (6-3, 6-6) scored six times in the second inning and added three runs in both the fourth and fifth frames.

Avella is 0-4 in section and 1-5 overall.

  • • Alan VanSickle threw a four-hitter and took a shutout into the seventh inning as Uniontown defeated host McGuffey 9-1 in Section 3-AAAA.

VanSickle struck out 11 and walked two and held McGuffey (1-8, 3-10) scorless until Chad Fleischauer’s single in the seventh scored Adam Townsend. Uniontown (5-6, 7-7) scored five runs in the second inning and that was all the support VanSickle needed.

  • Patrick Brady hit a pair of doubles and a home run to lead West Greene over Jefferson-Morgan, 8-6, in Section 2-A.

Tied 5-5 in the sixth inning, West Greene (4-4, 4-6) scored three runs, including an RBI double by Christian Fox. The homer for Brady scored all three runs in the third inning for the Pioneers.

The lone extra-base hit for Jefferson-Morgan (4-3, 5-3) was a double by Zach Gamble.

  • Burgettstown used steady offensive production from its lineup to score one run in five of the six innings it batted to defeat Bentworth, 5-2, in a Section 1-AA contest.

Cole Strain led the Blue Devils by hitting a pair of doubles. Jose Noce also had a double and drove in two runs for Burgettstown (4-5, 5-6). That aided the effort of Seth Arnold, who allowed only three hits and struck out four to earn the victory on the mound, despite having five errors made behind him.

Justin Kisner and Isiah Russell each doubled for Bentworth (0-9, 1-10).

  • Defending WPIAL champion Jeannette scored six runs in the second and 10 runs in the third to quickly defeat Mapletown, 16-1, in Section 2-A.

The Maples committed five errors and walked six batters. Jeannette (6-1, 8-1) had a balanced offensive attack. Zander Malik, Tre Cunningham, Drake Petrillo and Derrick Miller each had a double. Winning pitcher Tyler Elliot drove in three runs.

The lone hit for Mapletown (2-6, 2-8) was a single by losing pitcher Ethan Carter.

  • Brownsville scored 14 runs in the first inning and defeated Class 3A Section 3 foe Washington, 22-6, in three innings.

Seven of the 14 runs were unearned. Washington (3-6, 3-9) committed eight errors in the game.

Mike Allen led the Prexies with a pair of hits and four RBI.

Dylan Brosky hit a grand slam for Brownsville (6-2, 7-2).

  • Sevin Schoeneweis and Tony Tamilia limited Trinity to two hits over five innings as Moon defeated the Hillers, 15-1, to remain in second place in the Class 5A Section 2 standings.

The two pitchers allowed their defense to made plays behind them, only throwing 57 pitches through all five innings. Schoeneweis went four innings, allowing two hits and one run. Tamilia worked a hitless fifth to end the game.

Schoeneweis also led Moon (7-1, 7-3) at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Trinity drops to 1-6 in the section and 1-7 overall.

  • In other games, Waynesburg defeated Southmoreland 8-4 in Section 3-AAA. Charleroi was a 14-7 winner over Charleroi in a nonsection game. No details were made available.

High school softball

Sophomore Kylie Sinn fired a no-hitter and belted a three-run homer Friday to lead Carmichaels to a 15-0 five-inning victory over host California in Section 2-A.

Carmichaels (6-2, 9-4) has won five in a row and yielded only one run during the streak. California is 1-8, 1-9.

Sinn struck out six and walked three. Her home run was part of an 18-hit attack for the Mikes. Madi Ewart, Madison Ellsworth and Mia Ranieri each contributed a double.

  • Kourtney Gavatora, Jaelynn Clegg and Natalie French each had a run-scoring hit, pitcher Bailey Parshall struck out 13 and Belle Vernon scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to beat host Ligonier Valley 4-1 in a non-section game.

Parshall scattered five hits and issued only one walk. She helped Belle Vernon’s with a double, the lone extra-base hit for the game. The Leopards improved their record to 10-2.

  • Bentworth belted 17 hits and rolled over host Brownsville 12-1 in a five-inning non-section game.

Winning pitcher Leah Lindley threw a three-hitter and struck out six. She also hit two doubles and drove in a pair of runs. Emile Snyder had one double and drove in three runs ands Katie Babirad contributred a double as the Bearcats improved to 9-3. They have won five in a row.

  • Erica Haught, Elika Mowery and MaKenzi Hollie each had three RBI as Canon-McMillan collected 14 hits to defeat Mt. Lebanon, 12-3, in a Class 6A Section 1 game.

The powerful lineup of the Big Macs generated eight extra-base hits, including five home runs. Haught led the way with two home runs. Katelyn Greaves, Mowery and Hollie each hit a homer. Lindsay Schmidt was 3-for-4 and scored three runs for C-M (7-2, 8-2).

Cate Rogan went 2-for-4 for Mt. Lebanon (5-4, 5-4) but suffered the loss in the circle.

It’s the Big Macs four straight victory.

  • Kaylee Ludwick hit a two-run single to spark a four-run fourth inning as Elizabeth Forward defeated South Fayette, 8-3, in Section 2-AAAA.

Ludwick was one of four players with a pair of hits for Elizabeth Forward (6-2, 11-2). Bri Sersevic, Cassidy Kern and Taylor Ludwick also had two hits. Jordan Pinneri led EF by going 3-for-4 with three runs.

Four of the Lions’ five hits were from Madison Potteiger and Ashley Micholas.

  • McKenna and Madison Lampe combined for six hits to lead West Greene past Mapletown, 17-1, in a Section 2-A game.

Madison Lampe had two RBI as the Pioneers scored 13 runs in the second inning. Jade Renner had a single and a double, Kaitlyn Rizor hit three singles and Linzee Stover and Mackenzie Carpenter each had a pair of singles for West Greene (7-1, 10-3).

The lone hit from Mapletown was a double from Madolleen Grim. The Maples are 3-4 in the section and 5-4 overall.

College baseball

California split a PSAC West Division doubleheader Friday against Slippery Rock at Wild Things Park. The Vulcans lost the opener, 9-7, but won the second game 11-4.

Cal has a 22-18 record, including 10-12 in the division22-18 and remains in fifth place, three games out of the final conference tournament spot. Cal and The Rock (17-5, 26-12) play a twinbill today in Slippery Rock.

Right fielder Ben Maudie was 2-for-4 with a pair of two-run homers for Cal in the second game. Freshman pitcher Hunter Robinson of Waynesburg improved his record to 4-4 by tossing his second complete game and setting a season high with eight strikeouts.

Austin Logan had a home run, double and scored three times for Cal in the opener.
