Means sets Cal record
California University junior Jae’Len Means broke his own school record in the 100-meter dash Saturday at the 14th-annual Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg.
Means broke the school record during both the preliminaries and finals while at Shippensburg. He recorded the fastest time in the preliminaries with a 10.55 seconds and then won the finals in 10.52 seconds, which eclipsed his previous school mark by nine-hundredths of a second. Means’ time the fastest time by anyone in the PSAC since 2006.
College baseball
Three Point Park pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as the Pioneers blanked Washington & Jefferson 3-0 in a nonconference game Sunday at Ross Memorial Park.
Christian Negron (5-0) allowed one hit over seven innings, Jake Forgrave pitched the eighth and Addison Domingo got the final three outs for his ninth save.
Point Park improved its record to 41-7. W&J slipped to 23-12-1.
The Pioneers scored twice in the third inning on two hits and an error before adding the final run of the game in the fourth on two hits and an error.
A single by Ryan Sciullo was W&J’s lone hit.
- Waynesburg and Thiel split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday in Greenville. Thiel rolled to a 13-3 win in the opener before Waynesburg outlasted the Tomcats in the second game, 7-6 in 12 innings.
Waynesburg (6-10, 10-20) overcame an early 3-0 deficit in the nightcap and forced extra innings by scoring two runs in the eighth inning, the final run pushed across by an RBI single from Tyler Godwin.
Both teams scored a run in the 11th inning with Waynesburg’s coming on a solo homer by Tyler Reis.
Tyler Srbinovich, the fourth Waynesburg pitcher, threw the final two innings to get the win.
In the opener, Thiel (10-6, 14-20) forged a 9-0 lead by the third inning.
- California split a PSAC West Division doubleheader at Slippery Rock, winning the opener 4-3 before dropping the second game 20-5 Sunday afternoon.
With the split, the California has a 23-19 overall record and an 11-13 mark in league action. The Vulcans enter the final week of divisional play trailing Seton Hill by two games for the final conference tournament berth. The Rock improved its records to 27-13 overall and 18-6 on the conference.
In the opener, Slippery Rock held a 2-0 lead before Cal tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning Eric Fairman hit a leadoff double and scored on a single by Chris Wastchak. A pair of bunt singles loaded the bases and Kristian Webb hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, Austin Logan singled and scored on a single after singles by Fairman and Wastchak. Levi Krause’s single gave Cal a 4-2 advantage, which held up even with The Rock scoring in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Frankie Jezioro.
Tyler Eritz was the winning pitcher and improved his record to 4-1. Corey Fogle got his first save by getting the final two outs.
Lucas Fuscardo and Kyle Wise each drove in four runs in the second game for The Rock.
College softball
California bounced back from losing the opener, 6-3, to rout Slippery Rock 15-0 in five innings in the second game and earn a split of a PSAC doubleheader Sunday.
Cal’s Abby Sachse was 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI in the nightcap. Taylor Robblee drove in four runs, and Emily Price and Alexa Pastor each scored three times. Robblee threw a four-hit shutout.
Carlee Wickstrom hit a solo homer for the Vulcans (10-8, 16-16) in the opening game.
