Washington Salvation Army will host its annual Back to School Blast at 6 p.m. Friday. The event aims to help provide area students with new backpacks and other school supplies. The event will feature a mad-science show, light dinner for families and a creative school supplies station by Pittsburgh’s Creative Reuse. Families can register at 60 E. Maiden St., Washington. Families not needing backpacks and school supplies are welcome to stop at the event for dinner and activities.
Washington County Department of Parks & Recreation will hold Eight-legged Ramble – Spider Mania at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at Mingo Creek County Park, Shelter 6. Spend the evening with California University of Pennsylvania professor Dr. Chad Hanna searching for, observing and identifying spiders found in the fields and forests of the park. Participants are welcome to bring spiders from home for identification purposes. Dress for the weather and light hiking; long pants, a long sleeved shirt or light sweatshirt and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for this activity. There is no fee. The King Coal Association’s 65th Annual Bituminous Coal Show will take place Aug. 18-25, in Carmichaels. The theme for this year’s festival is “65 Years of Honoring Our Miners.” The festival kicks off with the King Coal/Sara L. Ruth Memorial Golf Outing and the King Coal 5K on Aug.18 and continues on Aug. 19 with the 65th Annual State Bituminous Coal Queen Pageant. The carnival begins Aug. 21 and lasts until Aug. 25. Other events such as the Children’s Pet and Bicycle Parades, nightly bingo, car show, the Eastern Mining Collector’s Show and educational exhibits occur throughout the festival. The monthly meeting of the Mon Valley Coin Club will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 19 at 303 Chamber Plaza in Charleroi. All members and the general public are invited. Program will be on silver dollars.
