Oh, Washington County voters, tell me it just ain’t so! During the 2016 campaign for president, tell me you didn’t understand; you didn’t see it coming. Tell me you were duped into believing Donald Trump was the answer to all of America’s social, political, domestic and international dilemmas. You didn’t see the bullying, the brash encouragements of violence upon those who opposed him, the misogynistic demeanor toward women, the unrealistic promise of Mexico paying for his ill-advised border wall, his cozying-up-to and admiration for dictators, thugs, and autocrats, especially the likes of Vladimir Putin, his six bankrupt business failures, his reputation for stiffing contractors out of valid payments, his child-like name calling of rivals and competitors. The list goes on. Yet, you still voted for him.

Now, look what you helped to elect as our president. We have a president who held a closed-door meeting with Putin, who has the undisputed agenda of destabilizing free democracies. We have a president who brazenly and openly seeks to derail a legitimate investigation in his campaign’s possible conspiring with a hostile power to win the 2016 election, who leads an administration that is responsible for dastardly separating families at the southern border with no method of humanely managing them while in U.S. custody. We have a president who keeps disputing all intelligence agencies’ analyses that the Russians meddled in the 2016 election and then takes Putin’s word that Russia was not involved. We have a president who has done nothing tangible to safeguard the November mid-term elections from any tampering by foreign powers. We have a president who “saws on that old log” that Americans repeatedly and erroneously feared, by conducting a campaign of vilification of immigrants as destined to take over the country and whose EPA policies will reverse decades of environmental safeguards necessary for the well-being of the planet, and by a reliable count, has uttered more than 4,200 false statements since he took office.

You saw and understood all of it, held your noses, plugged your ears, marked your ballots, then whispered a prayer that all will work out somehow. If I were you, I’d not anticipate your prayers being fulfilled. By his own words and deeds, it is painfully obvious that Trump has little regard for the well-being of our country and the integrity of its elections. Just keep the seat belts cinched up on your reclining chairs. There’s more rough road coming soon for Trump’s presidency. I’ll wager the bumps will be sufficient to bounce him right out of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.!

Let your voice be heard

Our democracy is in danger. This is about the American people and our way of life. We cannot be complacent. Call or email your congressional representative to tell him or her about the issues that concern you.

We voted all these people into office, and if they will not protect our democracy, will not listen to the will of the people, we can vote them out! They work for us and should be held accountable.

Vote on Nov. 6 and let your voice be heard.
