Belko named
All-American
California University senior cross country runner Alicia Belko earned NCAA All-America honors after placing 25th overall in a field of over 260 runners at the NCAA National Championships.
It is the third time in her career that she earned the laurels, finishing with a top time of runners from the Atlantic Region Saturday with a time of 23:16.6.
The Vulcans finished 26th in the team standings with 651 points.
W&J wrestling
takes 4th
The Washington & Jefferson College wrestling team finished in fourth place at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational with a team score of 103.5.
Ninth-ranked Michael Heinl went 4-1 at 149 pounds, including a pin at 1:35 over Springfield’s Juan Carlos Ochoa Montoya and a tech fall, 19-2, over Levi Hobbs of Alderson Broaddus in the opening two rounds.
Jared Walker, a South Fayette graduate, also went 4-1 to make the final of the 165-pound weight class. The junior pinned Cameron Crislip of West Virginia Tech and Mason Canonico of Gettysburg in the first two rounds. He fell by a 1-0 decision in the finals.
Mount Union finished first with 218 points.
Waynesburg pair win individual titles
Despite taking seventh place at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational, a pair of Waynesburg University wrestlers won individual titles in their weight class.
Ken Burrs won all three matches, including a 12-5 decision in the finals, to capture the 197-pound title.
Jake Evans, a heavyweight, went 5-0 with three first-period pins, a 10-3 win in the semifinals and knocking off former All-American Paul Triandalfilou of Gettysburg in the championship bout, 6-2.
At The Meadows
Windsong Leo knifed through the slop to collect his 19th win this season – and third straight – in Saturday’s $18,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows. Southwind Amazon is the “winningest” horse in harness racing this year with 20 victories while Windsong Leo is part of a four-way tie for second.
Dave Palone gave Windsong Leo a 29.4 second-quarter breather, which helped him shrug off the first-over challenge of Phoenix Warrior N. The 6-year-old Jereme’s Jet-Windsong Goldie gelding downed his stablemate, the pocket-sitting Hawk’s Red Chief, by 2 lengths in 1:51.4, with Phoenix Warrior A third.
Ron Burke trains Windsong Leo, who now boasts career earnings of $397,650, for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Phillip Collura.
Palone piloted six winners on the 13-race card. Also enjoying big days were Burke, with four victories, and Aaron Merriman, who fashioned a three-bagger.
In the NHL
Ben Harpur scored his first NHL goal, Craig Anderson stopped 36 shots and the Senators spoiled Erik Karlsson’s return to Ottawa by beating the San Jose Sharks 6-2 on Saturday.
Karlsson, the former Senators captain, was playing his first game in Ottawa since he was traded to San Jose in the offseason. The team honored the two-time Norris Trophy winner with a video tribute during the first period.
Ryan Dzingel, Mark Stone, Mikkel Boedker, Magnus Paajarvi and Bobby Ryan also scored as the Senators (12-12-3) won their third straight. Boedker added three assists for a four-point outing.
- Alex Radulov scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period as the Dallas Stars edged the Vancouver Canucks 2-1.
Jamie Benn also scored midway through the third for the Stars, who are 3-1-1 in their last five games.
