Major colleges basketball: Kansas rallies to beat West Virginia
Udoka Azubuike scored 21 points and Devonte’ Graham added 15 to help No. 13 Kansas beat No. 20 West Virginia 77-69 Saturday night.
Both teams struggled to create much separation in the first half, neither establishing more than a six-point lead. After being tied at halftime, the Mountaineers (8-6 Big 12, 19-8) took the lead with 17:22 left and held it until the game was tied again at 66 with about two minutes remaining. The Jayhawks (10-4 Big 12, 20-7) wouldn’t reclaim the lead until Svi Mykhailiuk hit a pair of free throws 30 seconds later.
Daxter Miles Jr. led West Virginia with 22 points, and hit 6-of-9 shots from behind the arc. Jevon Carter added 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
St. Joseph’s 82, Duquesne 75: Shavar Newkirk had 26 points and a career-high 10 assists and Saint Joseph’s rolled in an 82-75 victory over Duquesne for its third-straight win.
Newkirk was 7 of 15 from the field, made 10 of 11 free throws and collected his third double-double. Nick Robinson had season highs with 16 points and 11 rebounds for Saint Joseph’s (7-7 Atlantic 10, 12-12). Rene Castro-Caneddy scored 21 points to lead Duquesne (6-8, 15-12), which has lost six of its last seven. Eric Williams Jr. added 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Robinson’s 3-pointer gave the Hawks a double-digit lead with 11:44 remaining in the first half, but Duquesne closed the half on a 10-4 surge to pull to 36-31. The Dukes stayed within single digits before Saint Joseph’s pulled away with a 12-3 surge and had a 13-point lead with 2:45 left.
