Cal women at No. 24
The California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team remained at No. 24 in the latest Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 poll on Tuesday afternoon.
The Vulcans closed the regular season last week with a pair of double-digit home victories. Cal U opened the week with a 68-54 victory against Seton Hill on Wednesday after allowing the Griffins to score only eight points in the first quarter. The Vulcans then posted a 73-50 win over Clarion on Saturday while committing just six turnovers in the final game of the regular season.
Cal remains one of three teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division and is now one of five teams from the Atlantic Region featured in the rankings. Virginia Union (25-2) climbed one spot to No. 4 following a last-second home victory on Saturday, while Glenville State (27-1) jumped two positions to No. 5 after extending its winning streak to 26 games. IUP (25-2) moved up one slot to No. 8 after closing the regular season on an eight-game winning streak. Edinboro (23-3) remained at No. 11 despite suffering its first loss in over a month. Virginia State fell out of the rankings this week after losing twice in the last five games of the regular season.
In college basketball
James Demery scored 21 points, Taylor Funk had 17 and Saint Joseph’s stunned Atlantic 10 champion and No. 17 Rhode Island 78-48 on Tuesday night.
Shavar Newkirk added 14 points for the Hawks (14-15, 9-8 A 10), who won for the fourth time in five games.
- Jontay Porter scored a career-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and Missouri ended its three-game losing streak with a 74-66 win at Vanderbilt
- Admiral Schofield had 24 points and No. 16 Tennessee used a dominant second-half performance to cruise past Mississippi State 76-54.
PAC releases
all-conference team
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference announced its 2017-18 All-PAC Men’s Basketball teams and yearly award winners Tuesday afternoon.
The all-conference teams, as well as the PAC’s yearly award winners, are determined, by vote, of the league’s 10 head coaches.
Thomas More College junior guard Damion King (Winchester, Ky. | George Rogers Clark) collected PAC Player of the Year honors to become the Saints’ second player of year since entering the league in 2005.D’Carlo Hayes earned the award following the 2012-13 season.
King, now a two-time All-PAC First Team selection, has totaled a league-best 120 assists this season and currently ranks 68th among NCAA Division III counterparts. He is fourth among PAC players in minutes per game (32.2), seventh in scoring average (15.4) and 13th in rebounding average (5.9). His .821 free throw percentage (92-of-112) and .409 three-point field goal percentage (38-of-93) rank fourth and seventh, respectively, in the PAC this season, while his .464 field goal percentage (150-of-323) ranks 11th.
King scored his 1,000th career point February 10 in a 65-50 victory over league rival Waynesburg University.
In the NBA
The Cleveland Cavaliers have indefinitely banned a fan from their arena for making racial taunts at San Antonio’s Patty Mills.
Security officials reviewed videotape from Sunday’s game and identified the fan sitting near the court. He yelled at Mills while the Spurs guard was shooting free throws in the fourth quarter.
The team did not disclose his name or any details about him. He is barred from events at Quicken Loans Arena, with the team to review the ban after one year.
