Small college basketball roundiup: DeRubbo gets 400th career win as W&J rolls

Washington & Jefferson College women’s basketball coach Jina DeRubbo earned her 400th career victory Saturday afternoon as the Presidents steamrolled Chatham 86-53 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Henry Memorial Center.

DeRubbo, in her 14th season at W&J, has a 400-169 (.703) career record. She spent seven years as the coach at PAC rival Bethany. She is the first basketball coach – men’s or women’s – in PAC history to reach 400 victories entirely as a PAC and NCAA Division III member.

The Presidents started hot, shooting 73.3 percent in the first quarter and building a 26-16 lead. By halftime, W&J led 47-23.

Lauren Gilbert led a balanced Presidents attack with 15 points and Amirah Moore followed with 13 points. Alie Seto had a season-high 12 points.

The victory improves the Presidents to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the PAC. Chatham falls to 1-5, 3-10.

California 71, Slippery Rock 62: Shatara Parsons scored 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead California to a 71-62 victory over Slippery Rock in a PSAC West Division game.

Parsons made 11 of 19 shots and was 8-for-8 at the free-throw line as the Vulcans, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II, improved to 8-0 in the conference and 13-1 overall. The Vulcans have won eight in a row.

California has beaten Slippery Rock 32 consecutive times. The Vulcans’ last loss to The Rock was in 2002.

Cal’s Bianaca Jasper scored 12 of her 14 points at the free-throw line and Mia Cushon had 13 points.

The Vulcans led by only 30-29 at halftime but pulled away over the final 20 minutes.

Morgan Henderson led three Rock players in double figures with 15 points. The Rock is 5-3 in the PSAC and 7-6 overall.

Waynesburg 80, Westminster 61: Anna Bartman, a junior guard from Beth-Center, came off the bench to score 21 points as Waynesburg won at Westminster, 80-61, in a PAC game.

Bartman, who entered the day averaging only four points per game, made six three-point field goals, and had two assists and three steals, as Waynesburg improved to 5-1 in the conference and 9-4 overall. The Yellow Jackets have won four in a row.

Waynesburg had five players score in double figures. Mackenna Drazich scored 16 points, Addy Knetzer had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Rachel Eng and Erin Joyce each had 10 points.

Emily Fromknecht’s 12 points led Westminster (0-6, 3-9). The Titans led 18-11 after one quarter but Waynesburg took control of the game in the second quarter and led 38-27 at halftime.

Men’s results

Wash & Jeff 74, Chatham 72: Amos Luptak scored a career-high 21 points, Nocholas Campalong came off the bench to add 15 points and Washington & Jefferson snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 74-72 victory over Chatham in a PAC game.

The game was close throughout but W&J (1-5, 2-11) used a 6-0 run to open a 69-61 lead with only 2:09 remaining. Luptak and Campalong combined to score all six points in the pivotal stretch.

Chatham (1-5, 4-9) made it a one possession game when Alex Schoppen, who scored 10 points, made a three-pointer with one second remaining.

The Presidents shot 57 percent from the field compareds to only 38 percent for Chatham.

Logan Hunter led Chatham with 13 points.

Westminster 91, Waynesburg 73: Deontay Scott scored 26 points, Marco Delorenzo had 23 and Westminster overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat visiting Waynesburg 91-73 and snap the Yellow Jackets’ six-game winning streak.

Westminster (4-1, 10-2) remained undefeated at home, improving to 7-0. The Titans overcame a 40-30 halftime deficit by scoring 61 second-half points. Westminster was 18 of 28 at the free-throw line in the second half.

The Titans had four players score in double figures. Jarret Vrabel had 11 points and Cameron kane-Johnson 10.

Jon Knab was Waynesburg’s leading scorer with 22 points, which included five three-pointers. Matt Popeck was the only player in double figures with 15 points for the Yellow Jackets (3-3, 7-6).

Waynesburg led by as many as 14 points, at 44-30, early in the second half. That was part of a 15-2 run for the Yellow Jackets.

Westminster won the game with a 40-9 run over a nine-minute stretch that gave the Titans a 74-63 lead.

Slippery Rock 85, California 74: Micah Till scored 20 points, Bruce Spruell had 18 and Slippery Rock pulled away over the final 10 minutes for an 85-74 win over visiting California 85-74 in a PSAC West Division game.

The loss was the sixth in seven games for Cal, which dropped to 2-5 in the conference and 6-7 overall. Slippery Rock is 5-2, 11-2.

Merdic Green scored 17 points and Brandon Simmons had 13 points and 10 rebounds for The Rock.

Jahmere Howze led five California players in double figures with 22 points. Isaiah Lewis had 17 points, Terry Davis 13, and Robel Teckle and Phillip Alexander 11 each.

The game was tied 42-42 at halftime before The Rock used a 25-9 run to open an 80-64 advantage.
