Greene County satellite display set for hall of fame
In an effort to get a clearer vision on nominees from Greene County, the Washington-Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame voted to open a satellite office at the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg.
The goal, says outgoing vice president John “Buzz” Walters, is to promote Greene County athletes for induction into the main chapter’s hall of fame.
“I believe there are many coaches in Greene County that deserve to be recognized,” said Walters. “That’s why we decided to work with the Washington-Greene (chapter) to form this. We’re just in the starting phase. We’ve come up with a list that concentrates on Greene County.”
Walters has established a committee of Greene County citizens to help recognize and nominate deserving athletes or contributors for induction. So far, it includes Mapletown football coach George Messich and his wife Linda, who serves as the school’s athletic director. The Bowlby Library reserved a room and space to display information and memorabilia of those inducted from Greene County.
“There probably aren’t many people who know more about Greene County athletes than the three of us,” said Walters.
Walters is one of 23 athletes or coaches who have been inducted into the Washington-Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1997 and George Messich went in with the 2013 class. The goal, Walters says, is to promote as many qualified individuals from the county as possible.
