WRESTLING
Waynesburg 69, Central Catholic 5: Waynesburg used seven pins en route to a 69-5 victory over Central Catholic in a Class 3A Section 4A match.
Luke Robinson (220) began the night for Waynesburg with the fastest pin of the night in 24 seconds on Central Catholic’s Michael DeLuca.
Luca Austustine (138) and Darnell Johnson (195) followed suite with pins in under one minute. Augustine earned his pin in 55 seconds, while Johnson only needed 36 seconds.
The Raiders four other pins came from Hunter Shriver (106), Caleb Morris (132), Jackson Henson (145) and Caleb Blair (182).
With a Trinity loss to Canon-McMillan, Waynesburg (4-1) moved up to the No. 2 seed in the section.
Fort Cherry 35, Washington 24: Nick Candelore and Aaron McIntyre earned pins as Fort Cherry controlled the middle weights and defeated Washington 35-24 in a Class 2A Section 1A match.
Candelore (145) began the success in the middle of the match with a pin in the second period of Washington’s Asa Charnick.
McIntire (160) then followed two bouts later with a pin against Cashmere Johnson at the 3:23 mark for Fort Cherry (4-1).
Brenden Hanning (120) and Tiki Glenn (182) won decisions for Washington.
Peters Township 64, Ringgold 16: Peters Township dominated in the upper weights and used seven pins to defeat Ringgold 64-16 and win the Class 3A Section 2B title.
Tairen Bundy gave Ringgold an early lead with a major decision to open the match at 106 before the Indians rallied by winning the next four bouts to control the match.
In those bouts, Will Kail (120) earned a pin at the 1:42, Jordan Marosz (126) won by fall at 5:58 and Donavan McMillan earned a major decision at 132.
Jacob Hurley (145), Brandon Matthews (160) Jeff Markert (195) and Grant Nelson (Hvy) also earned pins for Peters Township (5-0), which will host the section tournament next Wednesday.
Trent Girard (138) had a pin for Ringgold (1-4).
Jefferson-Morgan 39, West Greene 18: Jefferson Morgan won the final four bouts of the night to pull away from West Greene, 39-18, in a Class 2A Section 2 match.
Highlighting the run at the end by J-M (3-2) were pins from Alex Lange (126) in 1:04 and Josh Agnew (132) in 42 seconds.
Isaac Courtwright (170) won by fall for West Greene.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Trailing by one point with 12.5 seconds remaining in overtime, Joey Koroly scored on a layup with six seconds left as Trinity knocked off one-loss Moon, 65-64, in a non-section game Wednesday night at Moon High School.
After Koroly’s go-ahead basket, Moon (4-1, 11-2) missed a buzzer-beating shot for the win.
Tied at halftime, 27-27, Trinity (5-1, 10-4) rallied from a seven-point deficit it faced in the third quarter behind the Ecker twins and Koroly.
Jeff Ecker scored a game-high 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked six shots. Zach Ecker finished also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Koroly had 16 points for the Hillers, who extended their winning streak to six games.
Moon, whose only loss prior to Wednesday was against Mars, was paced by Austin Ryan’s five three-pointers that led to a team-high 19 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mapletown 49, Jefferson-Morgan 31: Abby Antill led all scorers with 19 points as Mapletown defeated Jefferson-Morgan 49-31 to win its second game in a row.
Antill, along with Taylor Vanata, built Mapletown (2-2, 4-8) a 17-6 lead after the first quarter.
Vanata finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Jefferson-Morgan (1-4, 2-11) attempted a quick comeback in the second quarter – the Rockets trailed 24-17 at halftime – but it was averted with a strong second half from the Maples.
Autumn Gustovich and Krista McCartney each scored nine points for J-M.
Geibel 49, Monessen 40: Gabby and Gillian Yourish combined for 35 points as Geibel defeated Monessen 49-40 in a Section 2-A game.
Gabby Yourish finished with a game-high 23 points, while Gillian Yourish scored 12 points as Geibel (4-1, 6-5) built a 25-13 halftime lead.
Monessen (0-5, 1-13) was led by Quitarah Hardison’s 19-point night. Hardison was the only Greyhound to reach double figures.
Belle Vernon 46, Ligonier Valley 42: Taylor Kovach and Kelsey Green each scored 10 points as Belle Vernon defeated Ligonier Valley 46-42 in a non-section game.
The Leopards trailed entering the fourth quarter but outscored Ligonier Valley 18-10 to pull away in the final minutes.
Caitlyn Trombley and Lindsay Steeber helped balance the offense for Belle Vernon (6-1, 10-4) with eight points apiece.
Ligonier Valley was led by Lexie Petros, who led all scorers with 15 points.
