Pirates fail
to sign Hoglund
The Pirates weren’t able to sign pitcher Gunnar Hoglund, their competitive balance pick (36th overall), before the 5 p.m. Friday deadline.
Hoglund signed with Ole Miss prior to the draft and had been attending summer orientation.
In his senior season at Fivay High School in Florida, Hoglund was 7-0 with a 0.27 ERA.
The Pirates will receive the 37th overall pick in the 2019 draft as compensation.
Woods, Mickelson
planning $10M match
Golf.com is reporting that Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are contemplating a $10 million winner-take-all exhibition match.
The report said Mickelson was hopeful the match would have taken place on July 3 in Las Vegas, except that negotiations with a television network and corporate support could not be worked out in time.
Mickelson said they are working on a different date.
Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, declined to comment on the report.
Woods was involved in made-for-TV exhibitions some 15 years ago. They evolved from singles matches with David Duval and Sergio Garcia to team matches, one of them a mixed team exhibition. Mickelson was part of just one of those matches.
Mickelson playfully hinted at such a match when he and Woods were in the same group at The Players Championship.
Parker signs
with Hornets
Tony Parker’s time in San Antonio is over, after 17 seasons and four NBA championships.
A person with knowledge of the negotiations said Parker has agreed to sign a two-year, $10 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets. The person spoke to AP on condition of anonymity Friday because the deal has not been signed.
Parker lost his starting role with the Spurs last season. The move to Charlotte reunites him with former Spurs assistant James Borrego, who became the head coach in Charlotte earlier this offseason.
Parker averaged career-lows of 7.7 points and 19.5 minutes last season. The six-time All-Star is the No. 4 all-time scorer in Spurs history and the franchise’s career assists leader.
He was part of 137 playoff wins with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, the second most by any coach and player in NBA history. Popovich and Spurs legend Tim Duncan combined for 157 playoff wins.
Parker has also appeared in 17 consecutive postseasons; only Karl Malone and John Stockton’s run of 19 straight playoff trips are longer.
Truck driver arrested
The driver of a semi-trailer that collided with a bus in an April crash that killed 16 people involved with a Canadian youth hockey team was arrested on criminal charges Friday, authorities said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, 29, was detained at his home in Calgary, Alberta, and would appear in a provincial court in Saskatchewan next week. He faces 16 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily injury.
The crash occurred in Saskatchewan April 6 as the bus was taking the Humboldt Broncos hockey team to a playoff game.
Thirteen people were injured.
The truck driver had been initially detained after the crash but he was later released and provided with mental health assistance. He was not injured.
