Walk-off grand slam lifts Rays over Marlins
Pinch-hitter Daniel Robertson connected for a game-ending grand slam, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays to a 6-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Robertson drove a 1-0 pitch from Kyle Barraclough (0-4) into the left-field seats. Robertson’s two-out shot was his eighth homer and came on the closer’s 40th pitch of the inning.
The 28-year-old Barraclough allowed three straight hits, including Ji-Man Choi’s RBI single, to start the ninth. Carlos Gomez struck out and Mallex Smith bounced into a forceout, but Willy Adames walked on a 3-2 pitch before Robertson was sent to the plate.
Miguel Rojas drove in two runs for the Marlins, who were trying for their first three-game series sweep. Trevor Richards allowed one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer (3-5) struck out 13 in six innings. But he allowed four runs, three earned, and eight hits in front of scouts from several playoff contenders.
L.A. Dodgers 11, Milwaukee 2: Matt Kemp hit two solo homers and Manny Machado drove in his first run since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers, who pounded out 15 hits in an 11-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Chris Taylor had three RBI for the NL West leaders, who scored five runs in the second and fifth innings. Alex Wood (6-5) won his fifth straight decision.
Milwaukee has lost eight of its last nine games.
Chicago Cubs 7, St. Louis 2: Jose Quintana pitched seven effective innings, keeping Matt Carpenter in the ballpark and helping the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2.
Quintana (9-6) allowed two runs and six hits, struck out six and walked four in his first start since July 10. The left-hander also matched his career high with 121 pitches.
Kyle Schwarber hit a tiebreaking solo homer off Mike Mayers (2-1) with two out in the sixth inning, and the Cubs broke it open with three runs in the eighth.
San Diego 10, Philadelphia 2: Freddy Galvis had his second straight three-hit game back in Philadelphia and Tyson Ross ended a seven-start winless streak to lead the NL-worst San Diego Padres over the Phillies 10-2 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.
Ross (6-8) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings.
Travis Jankowski and Wil Myers each had two RBI for the Padres, who outhit Philadelphia 15-6 and stopped the Phillies’ five-game home winning streak. Hunter Renfroe had three hits.
Arizona 6, Colorado 1: Zack Greinke allowed two hits and struck out a season-high 13 in eight dominant innings, Nick Ahmed drove in three runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped Colorado’s seven-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory.
The only hits off Greinke (11-5) were Ian Desmond’s solo home run in the fourth and Trevor Story’s one-out single in the seventh. The right-hander threw a season-high 111 pitches in his longest outing of the season. He walked one while improving to 5-0 with a 1.14 ERA in his last five starts.
Arizona moved back into second place in the NL West, 11/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
Boston 9, Detroit 1: Chris Sale struck out nine in six scoreless innings, and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a three-run homer to lift the Boston Red Sox to a 9-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Sale (11-4) allowed two hits, lowered his ERA to an American League-best 2.13 and won his sixth straight decision.
Blaine Hardy (3-3) allowed four runs and five hits in three-plus innings. Jeimer Candelario homered for the Tigers in the seventh.
Toronto 5, Baltimore 4: Yangervis Solarte hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied from a three-run deficit to beat Baltimore 5-4.
Toronto is 9-1 against the Orioles this season, including seven straight wins..
Jonathan Schoop hit a solo home run for the Orioles, and Trumbo had two hits and reached base three times.
Kansas City 5, Minnesota 3: Drew Butera hit a tiebreaking, three-run inside-the-park home run when center fielder Jake Cave failed in his attempt to make a diving catch in the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat Minnesota 5-3 to complete a three-game sweep.
Kansas City had not swept a series since last July 24-26 at Detroit, part of a nine-game winning streak.
Brad Keller (3-4) struck out a career-high eight in seven-plus innings, allowing three runs and three hits. He had given up nine runs, 13 hits and nine walks over 6 2/3 innings in his previous two starts.
Texas 5, Cleveland 0: Rougned Odor drove in three runs, Ryan Rua hit a two-run homer and the Texas Rangers withstood the heat on a 108-degree afternoon to beat the Cleveland Indians 5-0, stopping a four-game losing streak.
Yovani Gallardo (4-1) and three relievers combined on a five-hitter against the AL Central leader. Gallardo allowed three hits and four walks in six innings, his longest scoreless outing since Aug. 22, 2015, at Detroit.
Mike Clevinger (7-6) lost his third straight start, allowing two runs, four hits and four walks in 62/3 innings.
Seattle 8, Chicago White Sox 2: Ryon Healy hit a pair of three-run homers for a career-best six RBI, lifting the Seattle Mariners over the Chicago White Sox 8-2 Sunday.
Healy homered in a five-run first off Reynaldo Lopez (4-8) and in the eighth against Hector Santiago, giving him 20 homers and 53 RBI this season.
Marco Gonzales (11-5) won his fourth consecutive start, allowing two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.
