Cubs get LHP Hamels in trade with Rangers
The Chicago Cubs have acquired veteran left-hander Cole Hamels in a trade with the Texas Rangers.
Chicago also received cash in Friday’s deal in exchange for right-hander Eddie Butler, minor league pitcher Rollie Lacy and a player to be named.
Hamels is in the midst of perhaps the worst year of his career, going 5-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 20 starts with last-place Texas. He is just 1-3 with an 11.12 ERA in four starts in July.
Judge sidelined for three weeks: Yankees manager Aaron Boone says it’s “pretty realistic” that injured slugger Aaron Judge will be able to play in a game in three weeks.
Boone made the assessment a day after Judge’s right wrist was fractured when he was hit by a pitch against Kansas City. Boone said he’s not sure if that timeframe means a minor league rehab game or a return to the Yankees’ lineup.
Judge’s wrist isn’t in a cast and the team said the All-Star right fielder won’t need surgery. The Yankees put him on the 10-day disabled list.
Diamondbacks trade for Escobar: The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired switch-hitting infielder Eduardo Escobar from the Minnesota Twins for minor league right-hander Jhoan Duran and outfielders Gabriel Maciel and Ernie De La Trinidad.
The 29-year-old Escobar hit .274 with 15 home runs, 63 RBI and a major league-best 37 doubles in 97 games this season, his seventh with the Twins. From Venezuela, Escobar has played third base, shortstop and second base this season. In eight seasons in the majors with the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota, he has a .256 average with 63 homers and 287 RBI.
Phillies acquire Cabrera from Mets: The NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies have acquired infielder Asdrubal Cabrera from the New York Mets for a pitching prospect.
The Phillies traded Double-A right-hander Franklyn Kilome to get Cabrera.
Cabrera was hitting .277 with 18 home runs and 58 RBI as the Mets’ second baseman.
Nationals 9, Marlins 1: Max Scherzer allowed one unearned run and struck out 11 in eight innings on his 34th birthday, and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 9-1.
Juan Soto homered, tripled and drove in three runs, Matt Adams had three hits and two RBIs and Bryce Harper drove in two for the Nationals, who beat the Marlins for the 16th time in 17 games, including eight straight in Miami.
Scherzer (14-5) allowed three hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 74 of his 106 pitches for strikes. He lowered his ERA to 2.30.
Scherzer struck out the side in both the third and the sixth on his way to his 11th double-digit strikeout game of the season – his first since striking out 10 on June 16 at Toronto.
He reached the 200-strikeout mark for the seventh consecutive season, tying Roger Clemens and Walter Johnson for the second-longest streak in major league history.
Indians 8, Tigers 3: Francisco Lindor hit two of Cleveland’s four home runs, and the Indians broke through in the final two innings to beat the Detroit Tigers 8-3.
Yonder Alonso and Brandon Guyer also went deep for the AL Central-leading Indians, who improved to 29-13 against division opponents this season.
Cleveland scored four runs in the eighth on a tiebreaking single by Alonso and a three-run homer by Guyer.
Victor Martinez hit a solo shot for the Tigers, but All-Star Joe Jimenez (4-2) couldn’t hold off the Indians in the eighth.
Cody Allen (3-4) won in relief.
