W&J’s DeRubbo honored

Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball coach Jina DeRubbo was named the 2017-18 ECAC Division III Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

DeRubbo, who also earned the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award for the seventh time in February, led W&J to a 22-6 overall record. The Presidents were 15-3 in the PAC.

She also captured her 400th career victory this season, the only PAC to achieve that feat.

It was the 11th time in her 14-year career at W&J that DeRubbo has guided the Presidents to 20-plus victories.

Waynesburg University lost both games Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Lee County, Fla. The Yellow Jackets dropped their second game of the year, 5-4, to Drew before being shut out by Pitt-Bradford 4-0.

A big three-run second inning for the Rangers had Waynesburg in an early hole too big to make up. Drew used three hits to score four runs on the Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg (5-3) scored three runs in the fifth inning that started with a Cat Allstatt RBI single. Allstatt went 3-for-4.

Drew (6-2) scored an important insurance run in the fourth inning to allow it to preserve the one-run victory.

Pitt-Bradford pitcher Jordan Uhing limited the Yellow Jackets to five hits while striking out three batters to earn the victory.

The Panthers (4-2) helped out there pitchers with one run in the third inning, a pair in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth.

The only player for Waynesburg to have consistent success off of Uhing was catcher Rachel Skon, who went 3-for-3.

College baseball

A back-and-forth game turned into a blowout as Mitchell scored 13 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat Waynesburg 18-6 in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.

The Yellow Jackets held a 6-5 lead after five innings before Mitchell (6-1) used six hits to score seven runs in the sixth. The Mariners then had four hits to add on six insurance runs in the seventh.

Waynesburg (4-4) committed three errors in the two big innings.

Catcher John Pryzbylinski led the Yellow Jackets with three hits, while second baseman Tyler Reis went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

It was the first game of a doubleheader between the two teams, which was delayed because of inclement weather.

Murray ran for an AFC-leading 1,287 yards and nine touchdowns to make the Pro Bowl in 2016, his first year with the Titans. He ran for 659 yards and six touchdowns last season as Derrick Henry gradually took a bigger role in the running game.
