With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the seventh inning, Washington & Jefferson’s Ryan Sciullo singled home two runs as the Presidents defeated New Paltz, 6-5, in the second game of a doubleheader in the Russmatt Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.
The Presidents then added an insurance run on a throwing error by New Paltz (5-5) to extend their lead to 6-4.
Pitcher Will Bowser then came on for the No. 3 W&J (7-4) looking to secure the win. After walking the leadoff batter, and an RBI double, he stranded the game-tying run at second base for the save.
Dan Trettel had three hits and an RBI to lead the Presidents.
One inning separated W&J (7-4) from earning a sweep on the opening day of its spring break trip.
Trailing 5-3 entering the sixth inning, New Paltz scored seven runs on seven hits to take the first game, 10-5.
Mullen Socha led the Presidents with three hits, while Mark Merlino and Trettel each had two.
- Waynesburg University lost both games of a doubleheader to La Roche College.
La Roche pitcher Nick Tunstall dominated the Yellow Jackets by allowing only two hits over six innings and striking out eight to earn a 9-0 victory.
The Redhawks used 13 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance from leadoff hitter Jonathan Spina, to score runs in five of the seven innings.
La Roche (9-3) scored five runs in the first three innings.
Tyler Godwin had the only two hits for Waynesburg (4-8) in the loss.
La Roche used four runs in the fifth inning to rally and defeat the Yellow Jackets, 5-4, in the second game.
Tyler Reis, Alec Fantaskey, Brendan Kohan and Godwin each had two hits for Waynesburg, which has lost eight straight after starting the season 4-0.
In college softball
Washington & Jefferson still couldn’t crack the win column with losses against Southern Maine and Allegheny Sunday morning in the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
The Presidents lost 11-5 in the opener to Southern Maine, then fell to Allegheny, 7-3.
Collecting 14 hits as a team, W&J (0-6) couldn’t keep up with the Huskies’ lineup early. Southern Maine (4-6) racked up 12 of its 15 hits for the game in the first three innings to score seven runs to put the Presidents behind early.
Dana Parker, Danielle Kochka and Meghan Staab each had three hits for W&J.
The Presidents didn’t have troubles with Allegheny (5-1) until the final inning.
Trailing by two runs entering the seventh, 3-1, the Gators’ lineup finally came alive with six runs on seven hits to steal what was nearly W&J’s first victory.
Rachel Johnson had three hits and an RBI for the Presidents. Taylor Andres was the only other player for W&J with a multi-hit game.
Bogeys bog
down Rohanna
Waynesburg native Rachel Rohanna couldn’t build any momentum in the final round of Florida’s Natural Charity Classic in Winter Haven, Fla.
Entering the day tied for 20th, Rohanna had six bogeys to shoot a 5-over 77 to finish 6 over for the tournament and tied for 46th place.
Lauren Kim won the three-day tournament, a part of the Symetra Tour, with a 10 under. Kim entered the day tied for 10th but shot a 9-under 63 to defeat Daniela Iacobelli by one stroke.
