PT hockey falls

to Seneca Valley

Seneca Valley defeated Peters Township, 4-2, in the PIHL Class 3A championship game Tuesday night at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.

Cal Raymore and Jack Underwood scored for the Indians.

At The Meadows

Camera Lady avenged her only defeat this year when she made up 8½ lengths over the back half and nipped Albany Girl – who upset her last week – in Tuesday’s $20,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.

Away sixth, Camera Lady followed the live cover of her stablemate, Rosemary Rose, before fanning three wide into the final turn. Under the urging of Ronnie Wrenn, Jr., she caught Albany Girl in the shadow of the wire and downed her by a head in a career-best 1:53 in the slop. Graceful Vision closed well for show.

Ron Burke trains Camera Lady, who won for the sixth time in seven 2018 outings and extended her career bankroll to $168,603, for Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.

Mike Wilder collected three wins on the 10-race card.

Wickstrom, Downing earn PSAC awards

A pair of California University softball players swept the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division weekly awards.

Senior Carlee Wickstrom, a Peters Township graduate, hit .474 with seven RBI and recorded a .789 slugging percentage in six games at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla, to earn the PSAC Western Division Athlete of the Week.

Wickstrom went 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs in a 17-6 win over St. Thomas Aquinas last Monday. She then aided another dominant performance by going 2-for-3 with a solo home run and three RBI in a 13-1 victory over Post.

Cal junior pitcher Emilee Downing was named the PSAC Western Division Pitcher of the Week with a 0.58 ERA in her pair of complete-game victories.

She recorded 15 strikeouts at the PFX Spring Games.

Downing had wins over Bemidji State and Post.

Budget cuts force changes at EMU

Eastern Michigan University plans to drop softball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and wrestling at the end of the spring season due to budget cutbacks.

The Ypsilanti school announced the planned athletic cuts Tuesday, saying the reduction in sports to 17 from 21 will save about $2.4 million.

The school said the cuts will involve 58 male student-athletes and 25 female student-athletes. The university plans to honor athletics scholarships for students who remain at Eastern to complete their degrees.

It said the school’s Mid-American Conference affiliation isn’t affected.

Eastern said the last time it changed sports offerings was in 2000, when men’s tennis and men’s soccer were discontinued and women’s rowing was added. Men’s gymnastics and women’s field hockey were eliminated in 1988.
