Baldwin (9-1, 9-2) clinches at least a share of the section title with the victory. The Fighting Highlanders can win the section outright with a victory over Peters Township Thursday or a Canon-McMillan loss to the Indians next Tuesday.

In Game 1, the Presidents’ comeback fell a run short after scoring once in the fifth and twice in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Rachel Johnson and sacrifice fly from Brooke McCleester. W&J failed to get a runner on base in its final at-bat.

In Game 2, Muskingum (26-10) scored all eight of its runs before the Presidents were able to get on the scoreboard. W&J put up a four-run sixth but it was only good enough to cut the deficit in half.

pitcher Cueto on DL

Right-hander Johnny Cueto has been put on the 10-day disabled list by the San Francisco because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, and the Giants said left-hander Madison Bumgarner has been cleared to resume throwing.

Cueto leads the major leagues with a 0.84 ERA. The two-time All-Star is 3-0 in five starts with 26 strikeouts in 32 innings. He was on the DL from April 7-17 with a sprained left ankle.

Bumgarner broke the pinkie on his left hand in the team’s final spring training game and is at least a month from returning. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija began the season on the disabled list because of a pectoral strain.

In the majors

Matthew Boyd allowed one run in six innings, and that finally was enough to earn the left-hander a victory when the Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 Tuesday night.

Boyd (1-2) began this season with three straight outings of at least six innings with one run allowed, but he took a loss and two no-decisions. Against Tampa Bay, he allowed seven hits and a walk and struck out seven, and his teammates provided just enough support.

Leonys Martin hit a tiebreaking double in the fifth.

Chris Archer (2-2) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out six.

  • Mike Soroka pitched six impressive innings to win his major league debut for Atlanta, and the baby Braves hammered Noah Syndergaard at the outset of a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets.

With the three youngest players in the majors all in their starting lineup, including the 20-year-old Soroka, the surprising Braves (17-11) began the game with four consecutive hits off Syndergaard to build a three-run cushion. Freddie Freeman laced a two-run double to drive in newbies Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr. before Nick Markakis added an RBI single.

New York scored once in the ninth off Arodys Vizcaino and had a runner on second when pinch-hitter Jose Reyes lofted a fly to left field. Acuna, a premier prospect called up last week who is off to a sizzling start in the big leagues, got twisted around as he retreated but made a shaky-looking catch near the edge of the warning track for the final out.

Acuna smacked the wall with one hand, and Vizcaino had his fourth save as the Braves won their third straight and fifth in six games.

  • Pinch-hitter Yadiel Rivera improved his .100 batting average with a one-out RBI single in the 10th inning to help the Miami Marlins win their fourth game in a row and their third co
