Destin Weiser hit a hard ground ball to left field and Matt Whitfield scored from second base as Chartiers-Houston defeated Fort Cherry, 6-5 in eight innings, Friday for its fourth straight Section 2-A win.
Whitfield was intentionally walked earlier in the inning and advanced to second on a flyout before scoring the winning run.
Chartiers-Houston (9-4, 10-6) had an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when it had the bases loaded with no outs in a tied game but the Bucs failed to score. Weiser led C-H with three hits and three RBI. Jimmy Sadler also had a multi-hit game.
Fort Cherry (8-4, 8-4) took a 5-4 lead in the eighth after the Bucs committed an error. Blake McElhaney, Hunter Terpack and Mark Permigiani each had a pair of hits for the Rangers, who fall behind C-H to third place in the section standings.
- Trey Rohanna hit a home run, Luke Robinson pitched a strong game and Waynesburg had half of its eight hits in a seven-run seventh inning to defeat Washington, 9-3, in a Section 3-AAA game.
Rohanna’s three-run homer came after six of the first seven batters for Waynesburg (7-4, 7-4) reached base safely to start the inning. Rohanna went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Kyle Blasco hit a two-run double earlier in the inning for the Raiders. Robinson lasted 5 2/3 innings before reaching the 100-pitch limit, striking out seven and only surrendering one run.

The top of the Commodores lineup caused California (8-5, 8-6) problems. The first three hitters for Frazier – Logan Kulikoski, JD Celaschi and Mason Kelly – combined to go 6-for-11 with three RBI and scored three times.
California starter Brandon Powell was the hard-luck loser after giving up the five unearned runs.
The result ended streaks for both teams. California, which moved into third place in the section, had its three-game winning streak ended. The Commodores, who is eliminated from playoff contention, stopped what would have been four straight losses.
- Mitch Dunay drove in two runs, Ryan Kokoski pitched a five-hitter and South Fayette won at Quaker Valley, 6-4, in a Section 2-AAAA game shortened to five innings because of rain.
South Fayette (11-3, 13-5) erased a 4-1 deficit by scoring three times in the fourth inning and winning the game with a two-run fifth.
Christian Gabriel scored the tiebreaking run when he raced home on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Bedillion. Kokoski gave himself an insurance run when he singled home Richie Dell.
Kokoski struck out four and did not issue a walk. Gabriel had a triple and Matt Primm doubled for the Lions.
Quaker Valley is 4-10, both in section and overall.

Winning pitcher Ethan Carter pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up five runs (zero earned). - Bailey Shimek hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Waynesburg a thrilling, 7-6 victory over McGuffey in a Section 3-AAA game Thursday.
The win assures Waynesburg (6-3, 8-7) of third place in the section. Top four make the playoffs.

Losing pitcher Payton Hall had two of the four hits by Brownsville (1-9, 3-12).
In track and field
Waynesburg High School senior pole vaulter Will Behm has been waiting for competition the entire season. He finally got it and rose to the occasion.
Behm topped his personal best set at the Washington-Greene County Coaches Track Meet last month by clearing 15-0 Friday and winning the Baldwin Invitational. He outlasted Jono Pelusi of North Allegheny, the only other vaulter to exceed 14 feet, topping out at 14-6.
South Fayette High School senior runner Rachel Helbling won the 400-meter dash at the Baldwin Invitational with a time of 56.86, which was nearly two seconds better than the second-place finisher.
Helbling, a University of Richmond recruit, also won the 400 run in last week’s South Fayette Invitational. She bettered that time by nearly a second and a half Friday.
College lacrosse
Caroline Kallos scored five goals to lead the Washington & Jefferson College women’s lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory over Saint Vincent in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference semifinal game.
The win advances the Presidents to their third straight ORLC championship game at 1 p.m. tomorrow against top-seeded Transylvania at Pat Deacon Stadium in Lexington, Ky.
Rae LaRochelle returned to the lineup for W&J (14-3) to score four goals. She has scored at least three goals in all 14 matches she has played in this season.
Transylvania (17-1) defeated the Presidents 10-7 in early April.
Monomoy Girls wins Kentucky Oaks
After five relatively easy victories, Monomoy Girl proved it could also handle challenges in the Kentucky Oaks.
The filly first overcame an outside post start before gutting out a close win to maintain its hot start.
Monomoy Girl took charge near the far turn, and the filly outdueled Wonder Gadot down the stretch to win the $1 million Kentucky Oaks by half a length on Friday at Churchill Downs.
A race expected to match the top two 3-year-old fillies in No. 2 Monomoy Girl and points leader Midnight Bisou, the morning-line favorites, soon became Monomoy Girl’s to lose. The chestnut filly charged from the outside No. 14 post into contention and the lead and held ground in a thrilling side-by-side stretch battle with Wonder Gadot before Monomoy Girl kept the small edge to the wire.
