One dead, one severely injured in Smith Township accident A Langeloth woman was fatally injured and an Atlasburg man was severely hurt Tuesday afternoon in a head-on crash on Route 18 in Slovan. Smith police Chief Bernie LaRue said he was told by Allegheny County medical examiner’s office Mary Ann Craft, 73, died Tuesday night at UPMC-Presbyterian hospital. Also flown from the accident was Roger Illig, 73. Information on his condition was not available Wednesday morning. State police were called to investigate the crash, which occurred about 100 yards from the Smith police station, near the intersection with Johns Avenue. LaRue said it appeared Craft crossed the center line and hit the vehicle driven by Illig, who attempted to avoid the headon collision. Illig had to be extricated by Slovan firefighters. Route 18 was closed for about two hours, causing traffic to back up to Washington, police said. Some Burgettstown Area School District bus routes were affected.
