Seairra Barrett scored a game-high 34 points as California University used a huge fourth quarter to come back and defeated Charleston, W. Va., 70-53, in a non-conference game.

The Vulcans trailed 48-43 entering the final frame before outscoring Charleston 27-5. They went on eight- and 13-point runs in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Gina Vallecorsa was the only other player for Cal to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points.

Raziyah Farrington led Charleston, which scored more points than the Vulcans in each of the opening three quarters, with 24 points and eight rebounds.

In the NHL

Richard Panik and Alex Galchenyuk each had a goal and an assist, and the Arizona Coyotes became the latest team to take advantage of Washington’s penalty-killing struggles in a 4-1 win over the Capitals.

Galchenyuk and Vinnie Hinostroza each scored on the man advantage for Arizona. Washington has allowed six power-play goals in its last four games.

Darcy Kuemper made 38 saves for the Coyotes.

  • Aleksander Barkov scored twice during Florida’s five-goal second period and the Panthers won their fourth straight, 5-1, over Ottawa.

Frank Vatrano, Troy Brouwer and Jonathan Huberdeau also scored, and James Reimer made 33 saves.

Mike Hoffman had two assists and has points in 12 straight games.

  • Mikael Granlund scored his 10th goal of the season in the third period to lift Minnesota to its fifth win in six games, defeating the St. Louis Blues 3-2.

Devan Dubnyk made 29 saves, and the Wild won for the 10th time in their last 12.

In the NBA

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is denying a report that says Carmelo Anthony’s time with the team with end soon.

Anthony, who was out for the second straight game on Sunday night with an illness, is in his first season with the Rockets after one year in Oklahoma City.

The New York Times had a sourced report Sunday saying that Anthony has been notified that he will soon be waived. When asked about that report before Sunday night’s game, Morey said: “that’s inaccurate.”

The Rockets, who reached the Western Conference finals last season, are off to a disappointing 4-7 start, with many outsiders blaming Anthony for the struggles.

Morey went on to say that he wanted to speak to reporters in large part to defend Anthony.

Morey said: “it’s unfair that there’s all this speculation on just one person. I understand it, he’s obviously a Hall of Famer. But it’s unfair.”

MLB changes still

being discussed

Major League Baseball and its players’ union likely will not decide until the eve of spring training whether to change rules in an effort to increase action on the field next year.

Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem said Thursday as the annual general managers’ meetings ended that there was no consensus for change yet. More discussions will take place when owners gather next week, the union’s executive board convenes in late November and major league executives go to Las Vegas for the winter meetings in mid-December.

Topics being discussed include the increased use of defensive shifts, the decrease in innings thrown by starting pitchers and technology that aids sign stealing. A possible 20-second pitch clock and alterations to rules for waivers, trade deadlines and disabled lists also are being talked about by a tradition-bound sport resistant to change.
