W&J men fall

Matt Johnson scored 24 points to lead hot-shooting Pitt-Greensburg to an 81-70 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson in a non-conference game.

Johnson went 9-of-12 from the field, including a trio of three-point field goals, as the Bobcats shot 53 percent (30-56) on the night.

Seven of the nine three-pointers Pitt-Greensburg (1-0) made came in the first half as it jumped out to a 45-29 halftime lead.

Three players for Washington & Jefferson (0-2) scored in double figures. Cameron Seemann paced the Presidents with 17 points. Jonathan DeVito and Zach Queen each had 12.

Waynesburg

A balanced scoring effort with four players reaching double figures helped Allegheny open the season with a 69-49 victory over Waynesburg in a non-conference game.

Rylee Donovan, Delaney Arbore, Brooke Smith and Chloe Rabold each reached double digits for the Gators, who jumped out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter and 11-point halftime advantage, 31-20.

Donovan scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Brooke Fuller scored 12 points and Andrea Orlosky had 11 to lead Waynesburg (0-2).

At The Meadows

Jewels Forreal stalked her stablemate, McDazzle, from the pocket, then roared past in the Lightning Lane to spring an 8-1 upset in Tuesday’s $18,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.

McDazzle, who was bidding to extend her winning streak to four, turned back a stern third-quarter challenge from Easy Three. But that effort may have weakened her, as the 3-year-old Jewels Forreal had little trouble downing her 4-year-old stablemate by 1/2 length for Mike Wilder in 1:54.2 over a “good” surface. Keystone Riptide completed the ticket.

Ron Burke trains Jewels Forreal, a daughter of So Surreal-Dandy’s Jewel who lifted her lifetime bankroll to $169,313, for Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.

Trainer Karen Fread enjoyed a triple on the 13-race card.

In the NHL

Aaron Ekblad and Evgenii Dadonov scored goals, Roberto Luongo made 29 saves and the Florida Panthers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 for their fifth straight win. Jakub Voracek had the lone goal for the Flyers, who had won three straight and five of six.

  • Tom Kuhnhackl scored two unusual goals to lead the New York Islanders to a 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Jordan Eberle had a goal and an assist and Josh Bailey also scored to help the Islanders end a three-game skid.

Mathew Barzal and Brock Nelson each had two assists and Thomas Greiss stopped 22 shots as New York improved to 5-0-2 in the last seven meetings against Vancouver.

In the NBA

Jordan Clarkson scored 24 points, Tristan Thompson had 21 rebounds and 11 points, and the injury-riddled Cleveland Cavaliers won for the second time this season, defeating the Charlotte Hornets 113-89 on Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers (2-11) also broke a five-game losing streak. Cleveland’s first win came against Atlanta on Oct. 30.

  • The Brooklyn Nets say Caris LeVert won’t need surgery for what appeared to be a severe foot injury and could return this season. The Nets say their leading scorer was diagnosed with a subtalar dislocation of the right foot.

The team orthopedist says evaluations revealed no fractures and only moderate ligament damage. LeVert was hurt when his leg appeared to bend in a gruesome manner after he leaped to block a shot.
