Apodiakos
picks Duquesne
Belle Vernon soccer standout Markello Apodiakos has decided to continue his academic and athletic careers at Duquesne University next fall after making the announcement on Thanksgiving Day.
Apodiakos holds several school records with the Leopards and had a stellar, senior campaign leading Belle Vernon to a 12-6-1 overall record in 2018.
The all-state and All-WPIAL performer is the career leader in goals (89) and points (212) with the Leopards. This fall, he racked up 27 goals and 12 assists.
Apodiakos also holds Belle Vernon records for goals in a match (five) and season (37), as well as points in a match (11) and season (83).
Priore garners regional honor
After leading the California University of Pennsylvania’s volleyball team in points and kills this fall, junior Rachel Priore earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Atlantic Region Honorable Mention this week.
Priore earned the honor for first time in her career after setting a career high with 431 points (3.56 per set) and 395 kills (3.26 per set) this season.
She ranked second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in total attacks, while placing sixth in the league in total kills.
A native of Illinois, Priore helped the Vulcans return to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament and secure their sixth 20-win campaign in the last eight years. She garnered All-PSAC First-Team laurels earlier this month after earning third-team honors as a sophomore.
The AVCA all-region team is comprised of 14 players from eight schools and six additional players received all-region honorable mention.
Jarry back in NHL
The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled goaltender Tristan Jarry on an emergency basis from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League Friday.
Goaltender Matt Murray was placed on injured reserve.
Jarry, 23, has played 11 games for WBS this year, posting a 4-5-2 record, 2.89 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.
On November 14 at Springfield, he became the first goalie in franchise history to score a goal when he shot the puck the length of the ice into the empty net.
Last year, Jarry played in 26 NHL games for Pittsburgh, going 14-6-2. His 14 victories led all NHL rookies.
In college football

- In his final home game, Missouri quarterback Drew Lock rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more as the Tigers beat Arkansas 38-0 on a damp and dreary day. Lock completed 16 of 25 passes for 221 yards, surpassing the 3,000-yard mark for the third straight season.
- Miguel Recinos drilled a 41-yard field goal through a driving rain as time expired and Iowa beat Nebraska 31-28 on Friday despite blowing a 15-point lead. Mekhi Sargent ran for a career-high 173 yards and scored twice for the Hawkeyes (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten), who have won four straight over the Cornhuskers for the first time.
- Brian Johnson kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime and Virginia Tech pulled out the wildest victory in its 100 meetings with Virginia, 34-31. The Hokies won their 15th in a row in the series and kept alive their hopes for a 26th consecutive bowl appearance.
