Zini garners
PAC weekly honor
For the second consecutive week, Washington & Jefferson freshman Primo Zini has been named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.
Zini did a little of everything for the Presidents as he paced W&J with 18.5 points per game while shooting 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) from the field. The West Virginia native began the week by scoring a season-high 25 points against Juniata last Tuesday.
Zini is second on the Presidents in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game.
Six Panthers
named All-ACC
Six Pitt players were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team, while an additional six received honorable mention.
Senior tailback Qadree Ollison and senior offensive tackle Stefano Millin were second-team honorees. The Panthers had four third-team selections: senior tailback Darrin Hall, senior guard Mike Herndon, sophomore center Jimmy Morrissey and sophomore placekicker Alex Kessman.
Receiving Honorable Mention recognition were junior Maurice Ffrench (as both an all-purpose player and return specialist), senior fullback George Aston, senior offensive tackle Alex Bookser, senior guard Connor Dintino, junior cornerback Dane Jackson and junior safety Damar Hamlin.
Fournette suspended
The NFL has suspended Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette one game without pay for leaving the sideline, running across the field and throwing punches at Buffalo Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson.
NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan handed down the punishment Monday, saying “sportsmanship is the cornerstone of the game and the league will not tolerate game-related misconduct that conveys a lack of respect for the game itself and those involved in it.”
Fournette and Lawson were ejected in the third quarter of Buffalo’s 24-21 victory and continued jawing at each other as they exited the field and entered the tunnel to the locker rooms.
Braves sign 2
The Atlanta Braves added a pair of free agents following their first division title in five years, agreeing to one-year contracts with third baseman Josh Donaldson and catcher Brian McCann.
Donaldson agreed to a $23 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the agreement told the Associated Press Monday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical.
McCann’s deal was announced by Atlanta, where he became a seven-time All-Star from 2005-13. He got a $2 million, one-year contract to play near his home.
Donaldson was the AL MVP with Toronto in 2015 but has struggled since. He had a hip injury in 2016. A three-time All-Star who turns 32 next month, Donaldson hit .246 with eight homers and 23 RBIs in 52 games this year for Toronto and Cleveland.
In the NHL
Tom Wilson scored twice, Braden Holtby stopped 32 shots and the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders and former coach Barry Trotz 4-1 Monday night for their season-high sixth straight win.
Nic Dowd and Alex Ovechkin also scored for Washington, which won after giving up the first goal for the fifth time during its win streak that has catapulted the defending champions to first place in the Metropolitan Division.
In the NBA
Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb each had 21 points, and the Charlotte Hornets held on to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 110-107 on Monday night after nearly squandering a 25-point, third-quarter lead.
- Robert Covington scored 24 points, Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 102-95.
