Boys soccer

Leo Iacovangelo and Cullin Woytovich eached scored two goals as Section 3-AA leader Charleroi had too much firepower for Brownsville and defeated the visiting Falcons 8-2 Tuesday night.

The win keeps Charleroi undefeated at 9-0 in the section and 11-0 overall. It was the ninth time the Cougars have scored at least eight goals in a match.

Nick Laskey, Jace Kepich, J.D. Fleming and Eben McIntyre each had one goal for the Cougars, who had more than 30 shots in the first half and led 5-0 early in the second half and 6-0 before Brownsville (3-5, 4-6) scored its first goal.

  • Monessen secured a 2-0 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 4-A match that was called at halftime because of lightning.

Cameron Frolo scored two goals for the Greyhounds (5-2-1, 6-2-2). Morgan Madison and Charles Mrlack III had assists. Nathan Lynch posted his fifth shutout and recorded three saves.

The loss drops the Bucs to 2-6-1 in section and 3-8-2 overall.

Penguins set roster

The Pittsburgh Penguins have finalized their 23-man opening night roster by designating goaltender Tristan Jarry as Injured Non-Roster.

Jarry suffered a lower-body injury in the Penguins’ final preseason game in Columbus.

Pittsburgh’s 23-man roster includes 13 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders. Nineteen of the 23 players skated for the Penguins last year. The newcomers to the roster are forwards Matt Cullen and Derek Grant plus defensemen Jack Johnson and Juuso Riikola. Cullen is beginning his second stint in Pittsburgh after helping the club win back-to-back championships in 2016 and ’17. Riikola is the lone team member who will be making his NHL debut.

The Penguins open the regular season Thursday by hosting the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals.

College golf

Washington & Jefferson pushed its lead to 17 strokes over second-place Grove City after Tuesday’s second round of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio.

The final 18 holes will be held in the spring, April 27 at the Speidel Golf Club at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, W. Va.

W&J, last year’s champion, opened the two-day event with a 312 Monday before cutting 12 strokes Tuesday for a 612 total.

Saint Vincent sits in third place at 631 followed by Westminster (632), Thiel (666), Waynesburg (687) and Bethany (740).

W&J’s Jake Darr tied for medalist honors. Darr had to make a comeback in round two, as he trailed Cole McCook of Grove City by four strokes after the opening round. Darr answered the challenge by with a two-day 149 to tied with McCook.

Also finishing in the top 10 from W&J were Garrett Barilar (3rd) , Daniel Velasco (tied for7th) and Casey O’Korn (tied for 9th).

The W&J women will carry a six-stroke lead (747) into the third and final round. The final 18 holes will be played April 13 at Chestnut Ridge Golf Course in Blairsville.

Saint Vincent sophomore Sydney Ball was the medalist with a two-round score of 177.

MLB attendance down 4 percent

Major League Baseball’s average attendance dropped 4 percent to 28,830, its lowest since 2003 after 14 consecutive seasons topping 30,000, and six stadiums set record lows.

Baltimore’s Camden Yards, Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field, Minnesota’s Target Field, Miami’s Marlins Park and Pittsburgh’s PNC Park also drew their smallest attendance since opening as part of a ballpark boom. In a season of unusually cold and wet weather, 17 of the 30 teams experienced drops.

The average is down 14.4 percent from its high of 32,785 in 2007, the last year before the Great Recession. It had not been that low since 28,013 in 2003.

The NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers set a club record, Colorado drew its biggest crowds since 2001, World Series champion Houston since 2007 and the New York Yankees since 2012 – including a new Yankee Stadium record 23 sellouts.
