D-backs sign Balaguer
The Washington Wild Things have sold the contract of right-handed pitcher Jesus Balaguer.
A Cuban-born relief pitcher, Balaguer was signed by the Wild Things at midseason after he was released by the Houston Astros and became a key player in the setup role to closer Zach Strecker. Balagauer helped the Wild Things advance to the Frontier League playoff and championship series. He was 0-0 with a 3.50 ERA in 10 regular-season outings, then was stellar in the postseason, throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out 13.
“He was very excited about the opportunity and so grateful for the time he spent in Washington,” Wild Things assistant general manager Tony Buccilli said of Balaguer. “He was able to come to the ballpark with a smile on his face every day, play with a great group of guys and be part of something very special as a Wild Thing.”
Balaguer is the fourth player from the Wild Things to have his contract purchased by the Arizona organization, joining Stewart Ijames, Scott Kalamar and Troy Marks.
